The Journey to a Colorful Christmas: Ditching the Traditional

I have a confession to make: this year marks a significant shift in my Christmas decorating philosophy. For the very first time, I found myself decking the halls long before Thanksgiving, a testament to my excitement for a fresh, new approach. Historically, our family tradition involved purchasing a fresh Christmas tree, a beautiful but fleeting centerpiece that never lasted long enough for early decorating. However, this year, we made a pivotal decision and invested in this artificial Christmas tree, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with the outcome! While “fluffing” an artificial tree requires a bit of patience and time, the long-term benefits and sheer joy it brings have made it absolutely worth the effort.

You might be surprised to learn that, despite my deep love for color in all aspects of my life and home decor, our past Christmas trees consistently adhered to a rather traditional red, white, and green color scheme. And honestly? I was growing weary of it. This year, my heart yearned for an explosion of color, especially on our main Christmas tree. But more than just color, I wanted a tree that felt truly eclectic, full of personality, and utterly devoid of any “stuffy” formality. My decorating process is never about achieving a magazine-perfect, Pinterest-board-ready display. I simply don’t have the patience for that level of meticulous planning and execution. If you’re hoping for flawless symmetry and expertly arranged baubles, you might find my approach refreshingly (or perhaps disappointingly!) different. Our tree, much like our lives, is perfectly imperfect, and that’s precisely what makes it so special and authentically ours.

Before we dive into the specific steps I took to bring this vision of a vibrant, colorful Christmas tree to life, let me share a few glimpses of its festive charm:

Isn’t it just brimming with fun and color? It truly feels like a happy tree, radiating cheer throughout our home. Now, let’s walk through the simple, layered process I used to achieve this eclectic, vibrant, and utterly charming look for our Christmas tree.

Building Your Dream Tree: How to Get the Look of My Colorful Christmas Tree

Creating a truly distinctive Christmas tree doesn’t have to be complicated. My approach focuses on layering different elements to build depth, texture, and, of course, an abundance of color. Here’s a breakdown of the key components and how I brought them together:

Layer 1: Garlands – The Canvas of Color

I always recommend starting with your garlands, as they act as a foundational layer that weaves color and texture throughout the tree’s branches. For our tree, I began with these delightful colorful felt ball garlands. I actually fell in love with them last year, but they were frustratingly out of stock when I tried to purchase them. So, when they reappeared in stock this past Spring, I didn’t hesitate and ordered them immediately, eagerly anticipating the moment I could finally drape them on our tree. Felt ball garlands are fantastic because they introduce a soft texture and a playful array of hues without overwhelming the eye. When placing them, don’t worry about perfect spirals; a gentle, whimsical drape that tucks in and out of the branches creates a more organic and inviting feel.

Layer 2: Picks & Sprays – Adding Depth and Dimension

Once the garlands were in place, the next step was to add another layer of visual interest and further inject color. This is where these colorful berry picks came into play. Tucking these vibrant picks deep into the tree’s branches instantly added a wonderful textural contrast and an additional pop of color that truly makes the tree sing. They break up the uniformity of the branches and ornaments, creating pockets of unexpected beauty. Think of them as little bursts of festive energy, strategically placed to enhance the overall eclectic vibe.

Layer 3: The Ornaments – A Kaleidoscope of Memories

One of the absolute best features of our new artificial tree is that it’s pre-lit. This convenience is a total game-changer, eliminating the dreaded task of stringing lights and allowing me to jump straight to the fun part: adding an abundance of colorful ornaments! Our collection is a cherished mix, accumulated over many years, each piece telling its own story.

The vast majority of our ornaments hail from Crate and Barrel. They consistently offer unique and beautifully designed ornaments that perfectly align with my aesthetic. Last year, I also scored some fantastic finds during the post-Christmas clearance sales at Hobby Lobby, which added even more variety to our collection. But perhaps the most treasured ornaments are the ones handmade by our kiddos. In years past, I confess I used to tuck these sweet, often wonky, creations into less visible spots on the tree. (Not my proudest moment, but it’s true!) This year, however, I made a conscious decision to fully embrace these precious, homemade treasures. I encouraged my girls to prominently display their creations, letting their artistic expressions shine. You can even spot one of their charmingly lopsided but utterly adorable candy cane ornaments in the photo below. This blend of store-bought beauty and heartfelt, handmade crafts truly encapsulates the eclectic, personal spirit of our tree.

The Final Flourish: A Tree That Sparkles with Personality

And there you have it, friends! Nothing overly complicated or meticulously planned. The beauty of this approach lies in its simplicity and the freedom to create a tree that genuinely brings you joy. We absolutely adore these colorful additions. They transform our living room into a cheerful, inviting space that feels truly reflective of our family’s personality. Our tree, just like us, is perfectly imperfect, and that’s precisely why we cherish it so much.

A colorful, eclectic tree isn’t just about the ornaments; it’s about the feeling it evokes. It’s a statement that holiday decor can be bold, personal, and full of character. Consider adding a whimsical tree skirt or a vibrant collar at the base to tie the whole look together. Don’t be afraid to experiment with unexpected colors or unique ornament shapes. The goal is to create a holiday focal point that makes you smile every time you see it.

Elevating Your Entire Space: Beyond the Tree

The influence of a vibrant Christmas tree extends far beyond its branches, transforming the entire atmosphere of your living room. When your tree is a kaleidoscope of colors, it invites you to carry that festive energy into other aspects of your holiday decor. Think about incorporating complementary hues and textures through colorful throw pillows, cozy blankets draped over sofas, or even unexpected pieces of art. A colorful tree can serve as the anchor for a cohesive, joy-filled holiday scheme throughout your home, encouraging you to step outside the traditional box with your wreaths, garlands, and mantle displays. Small touches, like festive scented candles or a bowl of brightly colored ornaments on a coffee table, can echo the tree’s theme and make your entire space feel cohesive and celebratory.

Remember, the most beautiful tree is one that truly reflects you and brings warmth and happiness to your home.
