Designing children’s spaces, especially girl’s bedrooms, is an absolute passion of mine. There’s something uniquely rewarding about crafting an environment that sparks imagination and provides comfort. Before we dive into the delightful details of this colorful transformation, let’s take a quick look back at where we started. When we first moved into our house over seven years ago, Attley’s room was, to put it mildly, a blank canvas – a very boring, very beige box. One of the primary architectural challenges in the room was the large chimney that runs vertically through it, creating awkward and unused niches on both sides.

The Vision: From Beige to Beautiful
The catalyst for Attley’s room refresh was the exciting decision to upgrade her from a twin-sized bed to a full-sized bed. This change opened up a world of possibilities for a more mature yet still wonderfully playful space. Our vision was to infuse the room with color, personality, and thoughtful details that would grow with her, while also addressing those tricky architectural elements. We wanted a room that felt truly ‘Attley’ – vibrant, cozy, and full of character.
Key Transformations That Made All The Difference:
To bring this vision to life, we embarked on a series of significant updates:
- A Fresh Coat: We completely repainted the ceiling, walls (using the serene ‘Falling Snow’ by Behr), and trim, instantly brightening the space.
- Door Revitalization: Even the doors in her room received a fresh coat of paint, adding subtle pops of complementary color.
- Illuminating Style: A new, statement light fixture was hung, becoming a central decorative element.
- Plush Underfoot: We had brand new, soft carpet installed, providing a comfortable foundation for the room.
- The Enchanting Wall Mural: The fox wall mural became the room’s undeniable focal point, adding whimsy and a splash of nature-inspired color.
- Layered Comfort: The new Mohawk Larrabee Area Rug, paired with a rug pad, was laid over the carpet, adding texture, warmth, and another layer of color.
- Smart Storage: Her new closet system was installed, including ingenious back-of-the-door storage to maximize every inch.
- A Rescued Bed: The used Jenny Lind bed, a fantastic Facebook Marketplace find, was lovingly painted and set up, ready to be the centerpiece of her sleep sanctuary.
- Dreamy Window Treatments: For her charming reading nook, I hung a new roman shade and playful curtains.
And now, for the moment you’ve been waiting for! Prepare to be enchanted by the “after” shots. The transformation is truly incredible, and the vibrancy is contagious! (Don’t worry, a complete source list awaits you at the very end of this post.)

The Heart of the Room: A Cozy Reading Nook
Without a doubt, my absolute favorite part of Attley’s revitalized room is her adorable reading nook. I crafted this inviting corner by simply adding a versatile white storage bench from The Home Depot. To transform it into a plush seating area, I topped it with a selection of soft cushions and pillows, making it incredibly comfy for settling in with a good book. The cubbies beneath the bench are not just aesthetically pleasing; they’re incredibly practical, perfect for neatly organizing books and decorative baskets. In a thoughtful touch, one of the baskets on the left discreetly holds her fire escape ladder—a functional item cleverly integrated into the design.

To further define and enhance this charming reading nook, I “framed” it with these absolutely stunning curtains from Spoonflower/Roostery Home. Their vibrant pattern and luxurious fabric add a touch of sophisticated whimsy. Above the nook, I hung the DIY felt ball letter I crafted for her a few years back, which introduces a playful, personalized element that perfectly complements the room’s cheerful aesthetic.

The Dreamy Jenny Lind Bed: A Second Chance Story
The bed itself has a charming story. I stumbled upon this fantastic Jenny Lind bed on the Facebook Marketplace and managed to snag it for an unbelievable $150! It was solid wood and simply needed a little tender loving care and a fresh coat of paint to bring it back to life. Attley herself chose a beautiful coral color, and honestly, we are both completely obsessed with how it turned out. The vibrant hue makes it a focal point, radiating warmth and personality.
Above her bed, I created a custom print featuring lyrics from one of her favorite songs from The Greatest Showman. This personalized artwork adds a touch of inspiration and sentimentality to her space. I’m truly happy with how this DIY element perfectly ties into the room’s theme. Smart Storage and Artistic Harmony: The Dresser Area
In a clever furniture swap, we moved Attley’s old dressers and bookcases into Avery’s room, bringing Avery’s beautifully restored dresser into Attley’s space. This swap proved to be a perfect fit, both aesthetically and functionally! This gorgeous dresser was a lucky roadside find that I lovingly restored. You can check out this post to see the full restoration process and get tips for your own furniture projects.
Above the dresser, we hung artwork Attley already owned. We deliberately kept this area simple and understated to ensure it complemented, rather than competed with, the show-stopping fox wall mural that adorns another section of the room. The balance between the intricate mural and the simpler art creates a harmonious and visually appealing space that feels layered without being overwhelming.

A Productive Niche: The Built-in Desk Area
Let’s not forget the ingenious desk area. Years ago, we custom-built these DIY floating shelves and desk to perfectly utilize the challenging, awkward niche created by the chimney. This bespoke solution not only transformed a previously difficult space into a highly functional one but also added a custom, built-in feel to the room. We completed this sweet little workspace with a simple yet stylish wood and rattan chair from The Home Depot, which ties into the natural elements of the fox mural and adds a touch of modern bohemian charm. It’s now a dedicated spot for homework, crafting, and creative play.

Adding Softness and Style: The Area Rug
And of course, I absolutely can’t forget to highlight one of our favorite elements that adds immense comfort and style to the room: the gorgeous area rug. For those wondering, yes, you absolutely can use area rugs over carpet! This particular rug’s colors and pattern are sheer perfection, tying all the vibrant hues of the room together, and it’s incredibly soft underfoot. It defines the central sleeping area, adding another layer of texture and warmth. What do you think of this final touch?
Before & After: A Dramatic Transformation
You know I can’t resist a good side-by-side comparison! Seeing these images together truly underscores the incredible journey this room has taken. From a dull, uninspired space to a lively, personality-filled haven, the difference is night and day.
