The Ultimate Colorful & Modern Laundry Room Makeover: Easy, Affordable & Highly Functional!
We are absolutely thrilled to share the stunning transformation of our laundry room! This vibrant and modern space is now a true highlight of our home, proving that even utilitarian areas can be infused with style and personality. Join us as we reveal how we achieved this incredible makeover with ease and without breaking the bank.

If you’ve been following our journey on Instagram, you’ll know that we’ve dedicated the past few weeks to revamping the laundry room in our current house. Interestingly, my very first blog post ever chronicled a laundry room makeover in our previous home! You might even recall our initial $71 laundry room makeover, and then later, a more extensive colorful update seven years later, just before we sold that house. It’s clear: I have a deep passion for transforming laundry rooms!
My philosophy is simple: every room in your home, no matter how functional, deserves to be loved and to reflect your personal style. This includes often-overlooked spaces like laundry rooms, pantries, and mudrooms. When a room is both beautiful and efficient, it genuinely makes daily chores feel less like work and more like an enjoyable task. This latest laundry room project, however, stands out as my absolute favorite to date. It’s a perfect blend of vibrant color, modern design, and was incredibly easy and affordable to execute!
A Quick Note on Flooring (2022 Update): Initially, we chose fabulous vinyl tile stickers for the floor to achieve a quick, dramatic aesthetic change without any demolition. This method worked beautifully for a stunning visual update. However, the high-traffic and moisture-prone environment of a laundry room proved to be more challenging for these specific floor stickers than expected. While we’ve used tile stickers successfully in other areas like Attley’s bathroom makeover and Avery’s bathroom makeover where they are holding up wonderfully, the laundry room floor required a more robust solution.
For long-term durability, we decided to make a few changes, including installing a new floating tile floor. While I miss the beautiful pattern of the original tile stickers, this new laundry room floor offers a far more durable and permanent solution. This experience taught us that while using tile stickers to update outdated tile is a fantastic, budget-friendly idea, selecting the correct size and type of tile sticker is crucial, especially for high-wear areas like floors. I’ve shared detailed insights on what size tile stickers to order in this post. It’s also worth exploring other affordable and budget-friendly flooring ideas that are ideal for laundry rooms.
The Challenge: A Large Room with Limited Functionality
Our laundry room is quite spacious, measuring 12 feet by 7 feet, offering ample potential. However, its original storage setup was nothing short of a mess. The only dedicated storage was a cramped cabinet beneath the sink, which, as many homeowners know, can be frustratingly small and difficult to access. Above the washer and dryer, there were upper cabinets that, despite the room’s generous 10-foot ceilings, were largely impractical for us. At 5’9″, I consider myself fairly tall, yet reaching anything beyond the very lowest shelves in those cabinets was a genuine struggle. The problem wasn’t just their height; the washer and dryer protruded significantly, forcing an awkward and uncomfortable reach. In essence, these upper cabinets were nearly useless, wasting valuable vertical space.
To truly appreciate the transformation, let’s take a moment to remember how this space looked before we rolled up our sleeves and started working. The “before” photos clearly illustrate the outdated aesthetic and the functional deficiencies we aimed to tackle.

Now, prepare to be inspired as we unveil the stunning “after” shots and delve into the specifics of our thoughtful redesign…
Functional & Aesthetic Enhancements: Bringing Our Vision to Life
Thoughtful Functional Changes for Enhanced Efficiency
Our primary goal was to maximize the functionality of this large room, which meant addressing its storage shortcomings head-on. One of the most impactful changes was on the previously blank wall. We removed Riggins’ (our dog’s) crate and, in its place, created an entire closet system using the incredibly versatile IKEA Boaxel system. This system, which is the modern iteration of the Algot closet system we frequently used in our old house, proved to be a game-changer. Given our 10-foot ceilings, this new setup provides an enormous amount of storage space. We integrated shelves, hanging rods, and even a drying rack, effectively transforming an underutilized wall into a highly organized and efficient storage hub. The best part? All of this functional storage, including the floor-to-ceiling curtains we used to cleverly conceal it, cost us an incredibly affordable $620 (delivery fees included!).

Another significant functional upgrade involved the space above the washer and dryer. We decisively removed the tall, impractical upper cabinets that offered little benefit. In their place, we installed beautiful, lower, and much more accessible open shelving. We utilized the easiest DIY wall shelves method, similar to what we implemented in our family room. For the shelves themselves, we sourced gorgeous walnut wood from a fantastic local business, GPS Hardwoods in Kernersville, NC, adding a touch of natural warmth and sophistication. These shelves are supported by simple, sturdy brackets, making them not only more functional but also aesthetically pleasing. Now, essentials like laundry detergent, Oxiclean, and dryer balls are effortlessly within reach. To complete the look, I, of course, added some whimsical art and lush plants, infusing life and personality into this highly practical area.

Dramatic Aesthetic Transformations for a Modern Feel
The aesthetic changes we implemented have utterly transformed this space, making it feel brand new and incredibly inviting. We began by updating the outdated light fixture to something more modern and streamlined. To introduce a burst of color and a playful pattern, we applied this stunning removable wallpaper. Removable wallpaper is a fantastic DIY solution for renters or those who like to frequently change their decor, offering a high-impact design without permanent commitment.
As mentioned in our 2022 update, our journey with the flooring was a learning experience. Initially, we were captivated by the idea of using awesome vinyl tile stickers from Mirth Studio. They promised an effortless way to modernize our outdated tile floors, bypassing the need for messy demolition or strenuous labor, and at a fraction of the cost of traditional new flooring. The visual impact was instantaneous and truly beautiful. However, for the high-wear demands of a laundry room floor, we ultimately opted for a more durable solution. We installed a new floating tile floor, which provides the resilience and longevity required for this busy space. This decision underscored the importance of selecting materials not only for their beauty but also for their suitability to the specific environment and its demands. Despite this, we still highly recommend tile stickers for less strenuous applications, where they offer a remarkable and budget-friendly update.
Regarding our window treatments, if you read our initial design plans for the laundry room, you might recall my original idea for pink velvet curtains to hide the closet system. Unfortunately, they weren’t available in the 120-inch length we needed, and I wasn’t in the mood for sewing. So, we pivoted to a simpler, creamy white curtain that still provides softness and privacy while complementing the room’s new palette.
The sink cabinet and countertops also received a dramatic overhaul. I painted the sink cabinet a rich, modern color, and the countertops were given an incredible facelift to mimic the look of marble. We followed the exact same proven process we used to successfully paint our kitchen countertops to look like marble – you can find that detailed tutorial here. These highly affordable fixes, coupled with swapping out the old hardware and faucet for stylish new ones, made this area look drastically different. As always, art was a non-negotiable addition! I firmly believe that even laundry rooms need art to feel complete and inspiring. The delightful laundry basket art print above the sink, which I created myself and love dearly, is even available in my shop – you can order one HERE.

That pretty much covers all the exciting changes we made to this once-neglected space. We poured our creativity and effort into every detail, from the functional storage solutions to the vibrant decorative touches. We truly believe that this laundry room now embodies our core design philosophy: that every area of your home should bring you joy and function seamlessly. We are incredibly happy with how everything turned out, achieving a modern, colorful, and highly efficient laundry room on an achievable budget.
