While commercially available magnetic poster holders are widely accessible online and generally quite convenient, I often encountered a limitation: their length. Most readily available options capped out around 4 feet, which simply wasn’t sufficient for my needs. I specifically wanted to hang a vibrant, large-format wall calendar that measured 6 feet in length, and I envisioned a seamless, custom display. This common challenge sparked the idea for a DIY solution. By leveraging readily available and surprisingly inexpensive materials, we devised a method to craft custom oversized magnetic poster hangers. This project empowers you to create custom-length art displays that perfectly suit your space and creative vision, all while being a budget-friendly and enjoyable undertaking.

Materials You’ll Need for Your Custom Magnetic Poster Hangers

Gathering the right materials is the first step to a successful DIY project. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you’ll need to create your custom oversized magnetic poster hangers, along with some helpful tips for each item:

• 1/4″ x 2″ lattice strips: These thin wooden strips are perfect for this project due to their light weight and affordability. You’ll need them in the desired length for your hanger. For instance, if you need a 6-foot hanger, purchase 8-foot lengths and cut them down. Always get two strips per magnetic hanger—one for the front and one for the back—to sandwich your artwork securely. Many hardware stores offer cutting services, so don’t hesitate to ask if you prefer not to cut them yourself.
• Small, heavy-duty round magnets: Crucially, these magnets must be thinner than your chosen wood strips to sit flush or slightly recessed. These magnets, measuring only 0.12 inches thick, are ideal for 0.25-inch lattice strips. Ensure you buy enough to adequately hold your artwork without sagging.
• DAP Plastic Wood-X with DryDex Dry Time Indicator: This wood filler is excellent for smoothing out any rough textures or imperfections in your lattice strips, ensuring a professional, polished finish. The color-changing indicator helps you know exactly when it’s ready for sanding.
• DAP Rapid Fuse All-Purpose Adhesive: A strong and fast-acting adhesive is essential for securely attaching the magnets within the wood strips. This glue ensures they won’t shift or detach over time.
• Compound miter saw (optional): While a miter saw makes precise cuts quick and easy, this project is entirely manageable with a hand saw and miter box for those without power tools. Alternatively, as mentioned, your hardware store might cut the wood to size for you.
• Sandpaper: Various grits (e.g., 120-grit for initial smoothing, 220-grit for fine finishing) will be needed to achieve a perfectly smooth surface after cutting and filling.
• Drill: Any standard electric drill will work for creating the magnet recesses.
• Forstner bit: This specialized drill bit creates flat-bottomed holes, perfect for housing the magnets. Choose a size that matches the diameter of your magnets exactly or is just slightly larger.
• Paint or wood stain (optional): To match your decor or add a pop of color, consider finishing your hangers with paint or stain.
• Painter’s tape: Useful for securing wood strips during cutting and protecting areas during painting.
• Command picture hanging strips or other wall mounting hardware: These provide a damage-free way to hang your finished poster rails. Nails or screws are also viable options for more permanent installation.

Step-by-Step DIY Tutorial for Magnetic Poster Hangers

Time needed: Approximately 2 hours (excluding paint/stain drying time)

This project is surprisingly quick and straightforward. With a clear plan, you can complete the main construction in about two hours, making it an ideal weekend craft.

1. 1. Prepare Your Lattice Strips: Cutting and Sanding

   Begin by cutting your 1/4″ x 2″ lattice strips to the precise length required for your artwork. For a 6-foot poster hanger, you’ll need to cut 8-foot strips down to size. If you’re using a compound miter saw, stack your strips carefully and secure them with painter’s tape to prevent slipping and ensure consistent, accurate cuts across all pieces. This saves time and ensures uniformity. For those without a miter saw, a hand saw with a miter box offers excellent precision, or you can leverage the cutting services available at most major hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowe’s. Once cut, give the edges a light sanding to remove any splinters or rough patches, preparing them for the next stages.

   

2. 2. Strategic Magnet Spacing and Precise Placement

   Careful planning in this step is crucial for the functionality and aesthetics of your magnetic hangers. First, determine the horizontal spacing of your magnets. Consider the width of the items you’ll be hanging. For my 16-inch wide wall calendar, I ensured each monthly section would contact at least two magnets for optimal hold. Once the horizontal spacing is established, mark a consistent line across all six lattice strips. This guideline will ensure uniformity when drilling the magnet holes. Next, decide on the vertical placement of your magnets. I opted to place mine on the lower third of the lattice strip, providing a subtle yet effective grip. Mark all pieces accordingly. Remember, the magnets on the front and back rails must align perfectly to create a strong, secure hold. Take your time, measure twice, and ensure all marks are consistent before proceeding.

   

3. 3. Drilling the Magnet Recesses with a Forstner Bit

   With your magnet positions clearly marked, it’s time to drill the holes. Use a Forstner bit that is just slightly larger than the diameter of your magnets. The unique design of a Forstner bit creates a flat-bottomed, clean hole, which is ideal for seating the magnets perfectly flush with or slightly below the wood surface. The key is to drill deep enough so the magnets are almost invisible but not so deep that you go all the way through the wood. Many drills feature depth gauges or stops that you can set to prevent over-drilling. If your drill lacks this feature, practice on a scrap piece of wood to get a feel for the correct depth, or use painter’s tape around your bit as a visual guide. Precision here ensures a professional, seamless finish.

   

4. 4. Gluing Your Magnets: The Crucial Polarity Check

   This step requires careful attention to ensure your magnetic hangers function correctly. Use DAP Rapid Fuse All-Purpose Adhesive for its strong hold and quick setting time. Before applying glue, it’s absolutely essential to test the polarity of each magnet. All magnets have a north and south pole. For your hangers to work, the magnets on the front rail must attract those on the back rail. To ensure this, hold two magnets together: if they attract, mark one side of each (e.g., with a small dot). Now, for one strip, glue the magnets with the marked side facing up. For the corresponding strip, glue them with the unmarked side facing up. This ensures opposite poles attract when the strips are brought together. Double-check your polarity for each pair of magnets before the glue sets to avoid having to re-do any steps. Apply a small dab of glue into each drilled recess, then carefully press the magnets into place, making sure they are flush.

   

5. 5. Achieving a Smooth Finish: Wood Filler and Sanding

   While lattice strips are economical, their surfaces can often be quite rough, as visible in earlier photos. To achieve a professional and refined look, I applied DAP Plastic Wood-X with DryDex Dry Time Indicator wood filler to all the rough areas and any minor imperfections. This particular wood filler is a personal favorite because it applies pink and then dries to a natural wood finish, providing a clear visual cue that it’s ready for sanding. Apply the filler thinly and evenly with a putty knife. Once completely dry (when the pink color has disappeared), sand all the wood strips thoroughly. Start with a medium-grit sandpaper (e.g., 120-grit) to smooth out the filler and rough areas, then follow up with a fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220-grit) for a silky-smooth finish. This step is crucial for an elevated aesthetic, regardless of whether you plan to paint or stain.

   

   After the filler has dried completely, sand everything smooth for a flawless surface.

   

6. 6. Customizing Your Hangers: Paint or Stain

   Now for the creative part: adding your desired finish! You have the option to paint or stain your magnetic poster hangers to perfectly complement your room’s aesthetic. For a minimalist look that blends seamlessly with my office wall, I chose to paint only the front of the rails using Pure White by Sherwin-Williams—the exact same color as my walls. This creates an almost invisible hanging system that allows the artwork to truly stand out. However, you could opt for a rich wood stain to highlight the natural grain, a bold color to make a statement, or even a distressed finish for a farmhouse look. Apply paint or stain evenly, following product instructions for drying times and recoats. Remember to protect your work surface and allow ample time for the finish to cure completely before handling.

7. 7. Securely Installing Your Magnetic Poster Hangers

   With your hangers finished, it’s time for installation. There are several reliable methods for attaching them to your wall. I personally favor Command Picture Hanging Strips for their strong hold and damage-free removal, which is ideal if you frequently change your wall decor or live in a rental. For a more permanent fixture, you can use small nails or screws, ensuring they are long enough to grip the wall securely but not so long they protrude. Whichever method you choose, use a laser level or a traditional spirit level to ensure both the top and bottom rails are perfectly straight and parallel. This attention to detail will significantly enhance the professional appearance of your display and prevent your artwork from appearing crooked. Measure the distance from the ceiling or floor to ensure consistent placement.

8. 8. Display Your Art and Enjoy the Flexibility!

   Finally, it’s time to add your posters, prints, or calendar to your new magnetic hangers! For large or long pieces like my 6-foot calendar, holding everything in place with just two hands can be a challenge. I found a simple trick: use a tiny amount of sticky putty in the top corners of your artwork to temporarily hold it against the wall while you align and attach the top magnetic rail. This temporary adhesive provides just enough stability to make positioning effortless. Once the top rail is in place and secure, the magnets will do all the work, holding your piece perfectly. Step back and admire your beautiful, flexible art display! The beauty of these hangers is how easily you can swap out pieces, keeping your decor fresh and dynamic.
