The Biggest Announcement Yet: Our Family’s Next Chapter and an Exciting Move to Oak Ridge!
Oh my goodness, friends! It has truly been a whirlwind of emotions and activity for our family these past few weeks, and I am finally thrilled – and a little nervous – to share the monumental news that has been unfolding behind the scenes. No, I’m not pregnant again, everyone is happy and healthy, and Joe and I are still as happily married as ever. This news is even bigger, a life-altering decision that marks a brand new chapter for us: **We are moving!** Our family is officially relocating to Oak Ridge, a charming and serene town nestled near Greensboro, North Carolina. It’s a significant change from our current city life, offering a blend of peaceful suburban living with convenient access to city amenities, and we are overflowing with anticipation, excitement, and yes, a touch of bittersweet nostalgia.
Are you as shocked as I was initially? I wouldn’t blame you if your jaw just dropped a little! I know this might come as a complete surprise to many of you, especially given how much love, time, and creative energy we’ve poured into our current home. But allow me to explain the journey that led us to this incredible decision, sharing the details without making you feel like you’re stuck in a never-ending explanation!
Leaving Our Beloved DIY Home: The End of an Era
As many of you know, our current home holds a very special place in our hearts. We absolutely, unequivocally love it. I’ve often said that I envisioned growing old within these walls, truly believing this would be our forever home until the day we eventually downsized. It’s more than just a house; it’s a testament to years of hard work, creativity, and countless memories etched into every nook and cranny. We have embarked on more **DIY home projects** than I can even begin to count, meticulously transforming every single room, one thoughtful detail at a time. Each corner tells a story of dedication, design vision, and a lot of paint, sweat, and love! You can truly grasp the extent of our transformation by **taking our full house tour here**. We don’t just like this house; we absolutely adore it, which is precisely why this decision has been incredibly profound and emotionally challenging.
To truly appreciate the remarkable transformation we achieved, take a look at these initial photos from the day we first purchased our home. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come from this original canvas!

And now, behold the remarkable metamorphosis! These are those exact same rooms, reimagined and brought to vibrant life through our passion for DIY and interior design. It’s a stark contrast and a beautiful reminder of what can be achieved with a clear vision, unwavering effort, and a willingness to get your hands dirty. We poured our hearts into making this house a true reflection of our family’s unique style.

Why We Needed a Change: Addressing Our Growing Family’s Needs
Despite our deep affection for our current residence, certain aspects of its functionality have presented ongoing challenges for our family dynamic and our professional lives for the past couple of years. These evolving needs ultimately became the driving force behind our decision to seek a new space. Allow me to elaborate on the key areas that no longer served us as effectively as they once did, creating a growing sense of spatial disconnect despite our best efforts to adapt.
The Overwhelmed DIY Workshop: Our Garage Dilemma
We are incredibly fortunate to have a spacious two-car garage. However, as many of you who follow our journey know, our lives revolve around continuous home projects, DIY renovations, and creative endeavors. This means we’ve accumulated a significant amount of tools, power equipment, building materials, and scrap wood – essentials for our daily work. Our garage, once spacious, has been bursting at the seams, struggling to contain the ever-growing inventory of our professional and personal projects. The constant need to shuffle things around, search for misplaced tools, and navigate precarious stacks of lumber became a major source of inefficiency and frustration. We even added two small sheds for yard tools and overflow storage, but even these additions barely scratched the surface of our storage problem. Given that designing, renovating, and DIYing is my full-time career, and it’s a significant part of Joe’s life as well, having a dedicated, functional, and organized garage setup isn’t just a luxury; it’s an absolute necessity for our business efficiency, creative flow, and overall personal sanity.
The Busy Hub: My Home Office Challenge
The other critical area that posed a consistent challenge was **my home office**. While generously sized – perhaps even a little too large for what I truly needed – and a blessing to have, its location within our home became its biggest drawback. Situated right in the center of all household activity, it occupies what was originally intended to be the formal living area. It’s connected to our main family room, where our girls’ toys and lively play often reside, by beautiful French doors. While we added a solid door to try and create more separation and privacy, it often felt like a permeable barrier rather than a true sanctuary for work. There were countless times when my entire family, including our sweet dog, would inadvertently gather or pass through my office while I was deeply engrossed in work. I confess, I don’t transition between work mode and home life easily; interruptions are incredibly disruptive, time-consuming, and frankly, quite frustrating for my workflow and concentration. With the added layer of recent global changes and our decision to homeschool this year, the issue of constant foot traffic, noise, and interruptions in my workspace became more pressing and concerning than ever before. It highlighted a profound need for a dedicated, quiet, and truly private workspace to sustain my business and personal well-being.

The Journey to Acceptance: Our Evolution on Moving
For the past couple of years, Joe had consistently, and quite rightly, pointed out that despite our immense love for our home, its practical limitations were increasingly affecting our daily lives and business operations. His recurring refrain was that it simply wasn’t working as well for us as it should. My response, however, was always firm and unequivocal: “I AM NOT MOVING.” I was absolutely convinced that we could find a way to adapt this house to our evolving needs. My creative brain went into overdrive, exploring every conceivable option: from adding a third bay to the garage with a dedicated office space above it, to building a separate “she-shed” in the yard for my quiet workspace. We even looked into the possibility of renting external office space to escape the home-based interruptions. I was fiercely determined to stay right where we were, pouring all my energy into finding creative solutions within our existing property, desperate to avoid the upheaval of a move.
However, about a month ago, during yet another heartfelt discussion about our persistent space challenges, something profound shifted within me. I finally told Joe that I was willing to seriously consider moving, but only if we could find a home outside the immediate city sprawl. My vision was a quieter, more private area, a place where we could enjoy a bit more space and a greater sense of tranquility between our property and our neighbors. This concession opened the floodgates to a new dream. Together, we meticulously crafted a very specific, non-negotiable list of what we wanted in our next home. Top of the list was a truly dedicated, quiet, and private home office for me, a sanctuary where I could focus without interruption. Equally important was a large bonus room, perfect for our girls as they grow older, providing them with their own space to relax, play, and host friends away from the main living areas. We also prioritized a yard with exceptional outdoor living potential and significantly more privacy than our current suburban setting offered, imagining peaceful evenings and lively gatherings alike.
The Emotional Rollercoaster of House Hunting
With our refined wish list firmly in hand, we dove headfirst into the exhilarating, yet often exhausting, world of house hunting. We meticulously scoured online listings, visited countless properties, and spent a busy, emotionally charged few weeks navigating the competitive real estate market. Anyone who has recently embarked on this journey knows precisely what I’m talking about – it’s a marathon of hopes, disappointments, unexpected twists, and an endless parade of homes that are ‘almost perfect.’
Our initial attempts were a true test of our resilience and patience. We quickly fell in love with a beautiful home and placed what we thought was a strong, competitive offer, only to lose it to a competing bid. We were incredibly bummed, feeling the sting of disappointment that comes with investing so much emotional energy into a potential new beginning. Not long after, we put an offer on a second home – one that I absolutely adored and genuinely believed Joe loved just as much. However, our offer wasn’t accepted, and then Joe candidly shared that he hadn’t been as deeply smitten with it as I thought. We ended up pulling the offer, and I must confess, I was super relieved that one didn’t work out. I firmly believe that both partners should equally love and envision their lives in any home they commit to. After these two unsuccessful contracts, I honestly thought our moving plans would be put on hold indefinitely. It felt like a sign to stay put, at least for a while, and refocus on making our current home work.
The Unexpected Gem: Our New Beginning in Oak Ridge
However, amidst our earlier house-hunting adventures, there had been a third house that consistently stood out to both of us. We were captivated by its absolutely perfect floor plan, offering a layout that seamlessly flowed and promised incredible functionality. Its outdoor living area was also a huge draw, with mature trees and ample space for relaxation and entertaining. Yet, we had initially held back from making an offer because it required a bit more renovation and cosmetic work than we had originally hoped for. To be completely honest, after years of endless DIY projects in our current home, we were feeling a bit tired and secretly hoping for something more move-in ready that already reflected our unique style. We needed a break from major projects, y’all! LOL!
Our initial hope was indeed to find a home that required minimal, if any, major projects, allowing us to simply move in and enjoy. This particular house, while far from being a “fixer-upper” in terms of structural issues, was undeniably traditional in its aesthetic. You know our style leans modern, eclectic, and full of vibrant personality. This home was, much like our current house when we first bought it, a canvas of beige and brown tones, with finishes that didn’t quite resonate with our contemporary tastes. It clearly needed a significant amount of cosmetic transformation – new paint, updated fixtures, perhaps even some structural modifications – to truly feel like “us” and align with our vibrant design sensibilities. It represented a challenge, not just a simple move, a testament to our ongoing commitment to creative transformation.
Still, its undeniable potential, ideal layout, and the promise of that sought-after privacy kept drawing us back. We found ourselves strongly considering it, almost against our initial impulses for an ‘easy’ move. And then, as if fate intervened, the price dropped to a point where we both knew it would sell quickly. In that decisive moment, a shared realization dawned upon us: we *had* to make an offer. We both admitted that we would be profoundly disappointed if someone else snatched up this incredible opportunity, realizing that the potential for what it *could* be far outweighed the initial work required. It was the perfect blend of necessity and desire, a fresh canvas for our next grand DIY adventure in Oak Ridge, a place where our family can truly thrive.
So, here we are! We are officially under contract on that house in Oak Ridge, ready to embrace this exciting new chapter. The emotions are running incredibly high – a beautiful mix of profound excitement for the future, the thrill of new design possibilities, and the very real stress that accompanies buying a new home. Oh, and did I mention we also have to sell our current beloved home in the midst of all this? And to add to the delightful chaos, we are about to embark on our first year of homeschooling! It’s a lot, a truly monumental undertaking, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. This is our exciting new path, and we are ready for it!
Our Signature Style: Navigating Life’s Big Moments in Quick Succession
If you’re thinking this sounds like a lot to handle all at once, you’re absolutely right! It is, indeed, a whirlwind. But this is, in many ways, just how we “roll” as a family. We have a peculiar knack for tackling incredibly stressful, life-altering events in rapid succession, almost as if we thrive on the controlled chaos! For instance, Joe and I got married less than a week after I graduated from law school – talk about a busy period! In that dizzying span between graduation and our wedding day, we managed to pack up our entire lives and move everything down to Tampa, FL – a vibrant new city where neither of us had ever lived before. Immediately after the move, we drove all the way back up to North Carolina for our wedding celebration. We then had only four precious days post-wedding to enjoy a brief, relaxing stay at a nice hotel before permanently relocating to Florida, just in time for my intensive bar review classes to begin. So, as you can plainly see, orchestrating major life changes with an almost frantic energy and an unshakeable determination is definitely our modus operandi, lol! This move to Oak Ridge is simply the latest, exciting chapter in our ongoing story of adventure and transformation.
