Even in contemporary homes that do include a fireplace, it’s typically a single unit in a main living area like a family room or great room. This leaves many homeowners longing for that distinct architectural feature and the unparalleled coziness a fireplace provides in other spaces.
In our former home, the primary bedroom was a prime example of this trend. It was expansive, almost cavernous, and lacked any real character or warmth. Despite its size, it felt cold and uninviting, without a single focal point or element of architectural interest. When we first moved in, it was essentially two large primary bedrooms combined, leading us to divide it into a sleeping area and a distinct sitting area.


To address the lack of character and bring in more natural light, we installed skylights. While this certainly brightened the space, it still didn’t achieve the cozy, intimate feel we desired. After much deliberation and envisioning, we concluded that a fireplace in the sitting area would be the perfect solution to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The only significant hurdle? There was no existing chimney in that part of the house. This led us on a research journey to explore the best options for adding a fireplace to an existing structure, and here’s what we discovered.

This entire DIY electric fireplace project was completed over a single weekend. The total time may vary depending on your chosen materials and level of experience. Patience and planning are key!

Step 1: Choose Your Electric Fireplace Insert and Finishing Materials.
The first crucial step is selecting the perfect electric fireplace for your space. Electric fireplaces come in various styles: wall-mounted units that hang directly on a wall, freestanding mantel fireplaces that resemble traditional units, and fireplace inserts designed to fit into a custom-built surround or an existing fireplace opening. For this tutorial, we opted for an electric fireplace insert, allowing us to customize the surround to perfectly match our aesthetic. When choosing an insert, consider factors like its size (width, height, and depth), heat output (BTUs), flame effects (realism, color options), and extra features like remote control or thermostat settings. These choices will influence your entire design and construction plan.
Once you’ve selected your insert, it’s time to think about the materials for your fireplace surround. The possibilities are vast: you could use classic ceramic tiles, natural stone, traditional brick (real or lightweight faux options), a sleek DIY concrete finish, or even wood paneling. For our project, we chose AirStone for the facing. We loved the authentic look of stone but wanted to avoid the significant cost, weight, and intricate cutting associated with natural stone. We knew we wanted to integrate built-in shelves on both sides of our DIY electric fireplace, so we carefully incorporated these elements into our planning. Consider the overall scale relative to the room, the desired height and width, and how it will interact with existing furniture and architectural features. This planning stage allows you to refine your vision and identify any potential challenges before you even pick up a tool. Here’s a glimpse of the mockup design we developed:

The specific dimensions of your electric fireplace insert are critical for the surround construction. We chose this 50-inch fireplace insert, and its exact specifications dictated the internal measurements of our frame. Always consult the manufacturer’s manual for precise dimensions, necessary clearances around the unit for heat dissipation, and any other installation requirements. These details are paramount to ensure a perfect, safe fit. After finalizing your insert and initial design, I highly recommend physically taping out the intended footprint and height of your fireplace on the wall and floor. This visual aid provides a realistic sense of scale and helps confirm your layout decisions before any cuts are made, preventing costly mistakes.

Step 4: Construct a Sturdy Wood Frame for Your Electric Fireplace.
With your design finalized and measurements confirmed, it’s time to build the structural frame for your electric fireplace. Using 2×4 lumber, cut the pieces according to your precise plans. Construct a robust rectangular box that will snugly house your electric fireplace insert, ensuring to account for all manufacturer-specified clearances. Incorporate vertical supports within the frame where you plan to attach any moldings, a mantel, or other decorative elements. Remember, the exact cuts and dimensions will be unique to your chosen insert and custom design. Securely fasten all frame components using wood screws and a drill, ensuring everything is level and plumb. A level and tape measure are your best friends here!
Crucial Step: Once your wood frame is assembled, perform a “dry-fit” by placing your electric fireplace insert into the frame. This verifies that the dimensions are correct and the insert fits perfectly before you proceed with attaching the frame to the wall and enclosing it.
Note: You will likely need to remove any existing baseboard molding directly behind where your new fireplace frame will sit. Use a utility knife to score the caulk line, then carefully pry the baseboard away. A multi-tool can be useful for making precise cuts to remove just the necessary section, allowing the fireplace frame to sit flush against the wall for a seamless finish.

Step 5: Install and Enclose Your Fireplace Frame.
After confirming the perfect fit of your fireplace insert within the frame, attach the assembled wood frame securely to both the wall studs and the floor. Use appropriate screws for fastening into studs to ensure maximum stability. Once the frame is rigidly in place, it’s time to enclose it. Since we planned to clad our fireplace with AirStone, which can be applied directly to drywall, we covered the entire wood frame with drywall panels. Measure and cut drywall sheets to fit each section of your frame, securing them with drywall screws. Ensure the edges are flush and smooth, ready for joint compound and tape if you were painting, or directly for cladding as we did. This creates a solid, uniform surface for your chosen finishing material.

Step 6: Clad Your Fireplace Surround.
Now for the exciting part: applying your chosen finishing material! As mentioned, we opted for AirStone due to its realistic appearance and ease of use. The beauty of AirStone lies in its simple installation process, requiring only a few basic tools: pre-mixed adhesive, a putty knife to apply the adhesive, and a hacksaw for making cuts. Begin by ensuring your first row is perfectly level, as this will guide the rest of your installation. Apply a generous layer of adhesive to the back of each AirStone piece using your putty knife, similar to “buttering” toast, and press it firmly onto the drywall. One of AirStone’s best features is its dedicated corner pieces, which eliminate the need for complicated miter cuts and significantly speed up the process while ensuring a professional, seamless look around corners. While it can be a time-consuming process to apply each individual stone, the method itself is remarkably straightforward and does not require specialized skills or heavy equipment.

Step 7: Install the Electric Fireplace Insert.
Once your chosen cladding material is fully installed and any adhesives have thoroughly dried (refer to product instructions for curing times), it’s time for the final step: installing your electric fireplace insert. Carefully follow the specific instructions provided by the manufacturer of your electric fireplace. Depending on the model, you might install the insert before or after cladding. We found it easier to install our insert after the AirStone was complete and dry. Gently slide the unit into its designated opening within the frame. Ensure it’s securely seated and flush with the surround. We deliberately left a small, discreet space on the right side of our fireplace frame to allow the power cord to be neatly fed through to a nearby wall outlet, keeping the wiring hidden for a clean aesthetic. Once plugged in, activate your electric fireplace to ensure all functions—flames, heat, and any other features—are working correctly. Then, stand back and admire your brand new, cozy focal point!

To complete the transformation, we added a simple yet elegant wood mantel above the fireplace. We also constructed stylish DIY shelves to flank the fireplace on both sides, creating a cohesive and functional sitting area. Reflecting on the entire process, this project stands out as one of the most impactful and surprisingly easy DIY jobs we’ve undertaken. The change it brought to the room was monumental; it no longer felt cavernous but rather radiated warmth and invitation. We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome and the newfound coziness it introduced into our home.
The photo below was taken shortly after the installation, before we made further updates to the room’s decor, such as the rug.
