Before diving into these fantastic budget-friendly transformations, we highly recommend listening to episode 7 of our podcast: Why It’s Important to Love Your Home. It offers the perfect foundation for this discussion, reinforcing the deep value of creating a living space that truly reflects and nurtures you. We believe everyone deserves to love their home, and we’re dedicated to showing you how to achieve that, regardless of your budget.
Tip 1: Declutter Your Space and Even Make Money Doing It
One of the most powerful, and often free, ways to transform any room is by decluttering. Over time, our homes accumulate items we no longer need, use, or love, leading to visual clutter and a feeling of overwhelm. Taking the time to declutter not only creates a more spacious and serene environment but can also put money back in your pocket! Imagine refreshing your decor *and* having funds to invest in new pieces.
Start by tackling one room or even one small area at a time. Be ruthless but realistic: if an item doesn’t serve a purpose or bring you joy, it’s time for it to go. Sort items into categories: keep, donate, recycle, or sell. While yard sales are a traditional option, we’ve found far more efficient and profitable avenues. Online platforms like Facebook Marketplace, local community groups, or even specialized consignment shops are excellent places to sell your unwanted items. We recently sold an entire art display system – including the pipe, frames, and prints – for $175 through a local Facebook group. This allowed us to update our decor with new pieces, all while making a profit. It’s a true win-win situation!

Tip 2: Introduce Life and Softness with Plants and Curtains
We’ve discussed this extensively before – and you can listen to the full discussion here – but the transformative power of plants and curtains cannot be overstated. These two elements can fundamentally change the ambiance of any room, bringing vitality and a much-needed touch of softness, all while staying well within a $100 budget.
Embrace Greenery: Plants, whether real or high-quality faux, instantly add life, color, and a sense of calm to a space. They introduce organic shapes and textures, making a room feel more inviting and complete. Don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb; there are incredibly realistic artificial plants available today that require zero maintenance. Look for affordable options at local nurseries, big box stores, or even discount retailers. A single potted plant can make a significant difference.
Softness with Curtains: Curtains are often overlooked but are crucial for adding warmth, privacy, and defining windows. They can soften harsh lines, dampen echoes, and even create the illusion of taller ceilings if hung correctly (close to the ceiling, rather than directly above the window frame). You don’t need to splurge on custom drapes. Regular curtains can be incredibly budget-friendly; for instance, the Ritva curtains from IKEA are a personal favorite and offer fantastic value. For an even more budget-conscious approach, consider making your own! I even teach you how to create stylish curtains from flat bed sheets in this post. With a little creativity, you can add flair to these affordable options to make them look incredibly expensive.
Tip 3: Inject Personality with Colorful Accessories and Art
Are you tired of bland beige or a monochrome palette? Neutrals provide a fantastic canvas, but true home design blossoms when you introduce splashes of color. You don’t need to repaint walls or buy new furniture to achieve this. The magic lies in affordable, impactful accessories like throw pillows and vibrant art pieces. These items are perfect for updating your rooms for under $100, offering instant visual impact and endless versatility.
The Power of Throw Pillows: A neutral couch (like our favorite, which you can check out here) becomes instantly vibrant with the right throw pillows. They are a brilliant way to experiment with color, pattern, and texture without commitment. I recently acquired these beautiful pillows, and they truly make the space pop! For ultimate flexibility, buy pillow inserts and separate covers. This makes changing your seasonal decor or updating your color scheme incredibly easy and space-efficient. My favorite inserts are these from IKEA. And here’s a secret idea to make changing them even easier – listen to the podcast episode for the full scoop! (Joe might tease me about my love for throw pillows, but my defense is pretty solid!)
I’m currently enamored with these gorgeous pillows I added to our kitchen from Ikea, proving that even unexpected spaces can benefit from a pillow refresh.

Affordable Art for Every Style: Printable art is my absolute favorite budget-friendly decor hack. It offers an incredible array of styles and subjects, allowing you to instantly change the mood of a room. You can source amazing digital prints from various online marketplaces, often for just a few dollars. We frequently get our prints from Printful for professional quality, but for even cheaper options, consider printing “engineering prints” at places like Staples or Office Depot for large-scale, minimalist art. I’ve curated an awesome library of art I’ve created myself, available to V.I.P. subscribers—just fill out the form at the end of this post to gain access!

Tip 4: Rearrange and Reimagine Your Existing Furniture
You don’t always need new furniture to achieve a fresh look. Sometimes, all it takes is a new perspective and the willingness to experiment with what you already own. Rearranging furniture is a completely free way to update your rooms and can dramatically alter the flow, function, and feel of a space. Don’t be afraid to push boundaries and try different layouts! If a room feels off or stagnant, a simple rearrangement can be the solution.
Think about how you use the room and what you want to achieve. Do you need better conversation areas? More open space? A cozy nook? Pull furniture away from walls, try angling pieces, or swap items between rooms. I recently broke it to Joe that I’m “stewing” on making some changes in our room – and while he’s usually moderately supportive, the point is, change is good! You might be surprised at how a simple shift can breathe new life into an entire space.
Beyond rearranging, reconsidering the role of your existing furniture can lead to exciting transformations. A dated dresser might become a stylish console table, or an old bookshelf can serve as a display for cherished items. With a little imagination, your existing pieces hold immense potential for rejuvenation.
Tip 5: Unlock the Magic of Paint for Unlimited Transformations
If there’s a true miracle worker in the DIY world, it’s paint. This relatively inexpensive material has the power to transform almost anything, making it one of the most cost-effective ways to update your rooms for under $100. A fresh coat of paint can revitalize tired walls, give new life to old furniture, or even unify a collection of mismatched pieces, making them feel cohesive and intentional.
Consider the impact of painting an accent wall, or giving an old bookshelf a bold new color. A thrift store find can be completely reinvented with a strategic coat of paint. It’s an accessible way to personalize your home and inject your unique style. We’ve used paint to create incredible transformations in our own home:
- Attley’s bookcases, for example, underwent a major metamorphosis thanks to paint. You can see how we made them into custom, beautiful pieces in this post – truly proof that paint is magic!

- Avery’s ottoman was another easy and perfect project. All it took was an ugly thrift store coffee table, some paint, and fabric we loved to create a stunning, customized piece that looks high-end.
