We’ve poured our hearts into every detail, and the result is a design we are truly in love with.

There’s a deep sense of accomplishment that comes with reaching a significant milestone in home renovation. Finishing this powder room isn’t just about a fresh coat of paint or new tiles; it marks the complete renovation of our home’s entire first floor! This ambitious journey has spanned nearly seven years, and to finally see our vision come to life, room by room, is an incredibly rewarding experience. It feels oh so good to stand in a fully transformed space, reflecting years of hard work, planning, and dedication.

Curious to see how we tackled this comprehensive DIY bathroom remodel? You won’t believe how efficiently we worked! We completed this extensive project in an astonishing seven days of actual hands-on work. For a detailed, step-by-step visual guide to our process, simply click play on the video below. It’s packed with insights and shows you exactly how we brought this vision to life.

The Bathroom “Before”: A Journey from Basic to Bold

Every impressive “after” story begins with a humble “before.” Let’s rewind to more than six years ago, when we first purchased our home. The powder room was a quintessential example of builder-grade design: outdated, incredibly basic, and drenched in a sea of uninspired beige. It lacked personality and offered little in the way of visual appeal, serving purely as a functional space without any charm.

Approximately five years ago, we decided it was time for a quick and budget-friendly refresh. This initial mini-makeover aimed to inject some life into the space without a full overhaul. We began by giving the existing sink and countertop a custom DIY concrete overlay, transforming its surface with a modern, industrial texture. Concurrently, we undertook the task of painting the cabinet beneath the vanity, opting for a fresh color to instantly update its appearance. To elevate the mundane builder-grade mirror, we crafted a unique DIY wood frame featuring a concrete inlay, adding a bespoke touch. The outdated lighting fixture was also given a new lease on life with a simple spray paint treatment and new energy-efficient bulbs. These relatively inexpensive updates made a noticeable difference, creating a more contemporary and personalized feel. This was the result of our first attempt at modernizing the space:

The Bathroom “During”: A Complete Overhaul

While our previous refresh was a good start, we knew the powder room had even greater potential. For this full-scale renovation, we decided to rip everything out and start from a completely blank slate. This meant a thorough demolition to prepare the space for its new modern, colorful identity. The transformation involved meticulous planning and execution, turning the empty shell into the vibrant space it is today. Here’s a glimpse into our progress, along with a comprehensive list of all the major changes we implemented:

  • Full Demolition: We began by completely demoing the entire bathroom, right down to the subfloor. This critical first step allowed us to address any underlying issues and ensure a perfectly clean canvas for the new design.
  • Fresh Paint Scheme: The walls and ceiling were painted a welcoming creamy white color, providing a bright and airy foundation that would allow our colorful elements to truly pop.
  • Door and Sign Enhancement: The powder room door received a fresh coat of paint, and a charming new powder room sign was painted and expertly hung, adding a touch of personality.
  • Artistic Wall Mural: One of the most striking additions was the hand-painted, colorful wall mural, a bold design choice that infused the space with unparalleled character and cheer.
  • Modern Floor Tile Installation: We meticulously installed new cement floor tiles from Saba Tile, chosen for their unique aesthetic and smooth, chic finish that perfectly complemented our modern vision.
  • New Vanity Installation: A stunning new vanity from Signature Hardware was carefully installed, becoming a focal point with its furniture-like quality.
  • Upgraded Toilet: We replaced the old toilet with a sleek, modern design featuring a unique square base, enhancing the contemporary feel of the room.
  • Stylish Vanity Light: A new vanity light fixture was hung, chosen for its elegant design and the beautiful satin brass finish that adds a touch of sophistication.
  • Sophisticated Faucet: A new faucet with a polished brass finish was installed, providing both functionality and a luxurious visual accent.
  • Elegant Mirror: A new, thoughtfully selected mirror was hung above the vanity, reflecting light and making the small space feel larger.
  • Functional Accessories: To complete the look, we installed a coordinating new towel bar and toilet paper holder, ensuring every detail contributed to the cohesive design.
  • Personalized Accessorizing: The final touch involved carefully selecting and placing accessories, bringing warmth and personal style to the newly renovated space.

The Stunning Bathroom REVEAL: Modern, Colorful, and Chic!

Enough of the anticipation! The moment has arrived to share the dazzling transformation of our powder room. Prepare to be inspired by how this once-dull space has been reborn as a modern, colorful, and utterly chic haven. Every element was carefully chosen to contribute to an overarching feeling of joy and contemporary design. Let’s dive into the details of the finished look!

It’s really hard for me to pick just one favorite element in this space, as every detail contributes to its unique charm. However, I’m excited to highlight the key features that truly make this powder room special. First, let’s talk about the incredible **Danenburg Vanity from Signature Hardware**. This piece immediately caught our eye for its exceptional design and craftsmanship. It’s not just a vanity; it truly feels like a sophisticated piece of furniture, which adds an elevated touch we absolutely adore. The herringbone pattern adorning its top surface is precisely on point, introducing a subtle yet striking texture, while the elegant mid-century modern legs perfectly encapsulate the contemporary aesthetic we were aiming for, giving me all the right design feels.

And then there’s the show-stopping **cement tile** on the floor. I’ve dreamed of incorporating cement tile into our home for ages; its incredibly smooth texture and chic appearance are simply unmatched. However, many of the cement tiles currently on the market tend to lean towards a distinct “farmhouse” vibe, which frankly isn’t my personal style. So, one day, I quite literally searched Google for “cement tile not farmhouse.” After sifting through an array of interesting but ultimately unsuitable results, I stumbled upon Saba Tile. It was love at first sight! Their modern, geometric designs were exactly what I envisioned. I contacted the owner almost immediately, proposing a collaboration, and was absolutely thrilled when he agreed! These tiles are everything, infusing the space with contemporary elegance and a unique artistic flair that truly sets it apart.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the carefully selected **fixtures** that complete this modern powder room design. I quickly fell in love with this particular **vanity light**, sourced from Build.com. Its beautiful satin brass finish offered the perfect balance of warmth and contemporary elegance, complementing the overall color palette of the room without being overly flashy. The subtle sheen of the brass adds a touch of sophistication, creating an inviting glow.

Once the vanity light decision was made, we ensured a cohesive look by selecting the **towel bar and toilet paper holder** in the very same exquisite satin brass finish. This attention to detail in coordinating the finishes of smaller hardware pieces creates a harmonious and polished aesthetic, making the bathroom feel thoughtfully designed rather than pieced together.

And then there’s our truly “sexy” **faucet**. We opted for this sleek polished brass faucet from Peerless, and I am absolutely loving its impact. It strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated style and everyday functionality, all while being commendably water-efficient. The gorgeous, shimmery finish acts like an exquisite piece of jewelry for the space, creating a captivating contrast against the crisp white countertop and walls. What makes me particularly happy is seeing the vibrant colors of the wall mural beautifully reflected on its shiny surface, adding an unexpected layer of visual interest and connecting the different elements of the room.

One of the boldest and most rewarding DIY elements in this renovation is undoubtedly the **hand-painted wall mural**. I admit, I was terrified to commit to such a prominent and colorful feature. The thought of painting a large-scale mural was daunting, but I am so incredibly happy I pushed through that fear! Now, I am completely OBSESSED with it. The vibrant colors and playful design perfectly encapsulate the “happy” vibe we envisioned for the powder room, tying all the modern elements together with an artistic flourish. For those inspired to try their hand at a similar project, a full tutorial for this delightful mural will be coming soon, so stay tuned!

Beyond the major elements, delightful small touches complete the room’s character. For instance, the unique piece of **artwork** I created for the wall above the toilet adds a layer of curated personality. It blends seamlessly with the mural’s palette while introducing its own artistic statement, proving that even small spaces can benefit from thoughtful art placement. It’s these subtle details that truly elevate the overall design, making the powder room feel custom and complete.

Oh, and let’s not forget the **new toilet**. We specifically chose a model with a distinct square base, a design feature I absolutely adore. This subtle yet significant detail instantly gives the fixture a more modern and clean aesthetic, diverging from the traditional round or oval shapes. It’s these kinds of thoughtful choices for even the most utilitarian items that truly elevate a space and align it with a contemporary design sensibility.

Phew! What do you think of our newly transformed powder room? This space has truly come an incredibly long way from its original, bland state. As is tradition with all our renovation reveals, I simply must finish this post with a dramatic side-by-side comparison, allowing you to fully appreciate the extent of this DIY bathroom remodel.
