Avery’s Mid-Century Modern Bedroom Transformation

After nearly a year of settling into our new home, we are thrilled to unveil a space that truly reflects our tween daughter, Avery: her beautifully finished mid-century modern bedroom! This isn’t just another room; it’s a vibrant, functional sanctuary that perfectly captures her unique style. The pure joy on her face confirms it – this mission is unequivocally accomplished.

Designing a Tween Dream: From Temporary to Timeless Mid-Century Modern

When we first moved into our current house, Avery’s bedroom was a collection of hand-me-downs and temporary fixes. She inherited this stunning mid-century modern bed from our previous guest room. While she adored the bed, the rest of the space was less intentional. We simply couldn’t bring the built-in bunk beds from her old room with us, a decision that initially presented a bit of a challenge for establishing a cohesive aesthetic.

Her temporary bedside table was a charming mid-century piece I discovered on Facebook Marketplace – a lucky find that hinted at the room’s future potential. For storage, we moved two large, old dressers and a bench into her room, primarily because she needed drawers and we had nowhere else to put them. However, despite these efforts, the room remained in a rather “thrown together” state for about a year, lacking the personality and functionality we all desired.

The dressers you see are familiar IKEA pieces that have served us well for over a decade, originally purchased for our girls’ nursery 11 years ago. While sturdy, they were simply too large for Avery’s current space and offered more drawer storage than she truly needed. Their imposing size made the room feel cramped and less inviting than it could be, especially for a growing tween seeking a more mature and personal environment.

Collaborative Design: Merging Style and Practicality for a Tween’s Space

The transformation began with Avery’s active involvement, a crucial aspect when designing for a tween. It’s vital to create a space where they feel truly at home and where their personality shines through. We completed the room just a few days ago, and Avery’s reaction has been overwhelmingly positive – she absolutely adores it! This enthusiastic approval is a testament to the collaborative design process.

Avery’s personal style is distinct from my own. While my other daughter, Attley, and I gravitate towards a broader spectrum of colors, Avery has a specific and strong affinity for purple and green. This clear preference became the foundation of her room’s color palette. Another unique challenge was Avery’s selective taste in artwork; finding pieces that she genuinely loved and wanted displayed on her walls proved to be quite an undertaking, requiring patience and a keen eye for unique, meaningful selections.

Avery’s Must-Have: A Dedicated Workspace

When we asked Avery about her ultimate desires for the room, one request stood out above all others: she wanted a desk. A personal workspace where she could focus on homework, draw, or pursue her creative endeavors was paramount. My husband, Joe, and I, on the other hand, had a strong desire to implement better storage solutions for her burgeoning collection of books, which often ended up piled on her bedside table or stuffed into the old bench. More importantly, we needed a designated home for her “treasures.”

Parents of young children and tweens can surely relate to the accumulation of various “doodads.” While Attley affectionately calls her small items “stuffy stuff,” Avery’s collection includes seemingly random rocks, feathers, tiny toys, and trinkets, all of which she cherishes as genuine “treasures.” We absolutely love her appreciation for these unique finds, but we also couldn’t stand them cluttering every available surface in her room. To help contain these precious items and bring order to her space, we ordered two of these clever storage bins, which have been instrumental in keeping her cherished possessions organized yet accessible.

Optimizing Space with Stylish and Functional Storage

Our solution was to integrate Avery’s desired desk by sandwiching it between these elegant bookshelves. These bookshelves, which we moved from our family room, are cherished pieces that you might remember from the dining room of our old house. Their slender profile and open design proved to be a game-changer. Unlike the bulky old dressers, these bookshelves are significantly more shallow, narrower, and visually “lighter,” instantly opening up the space and creating an airy, sophisticated feel. They provide ample vertical storage for books and decorative items without overwhelming the room.

While the bookshelves offered excellent open storage, Avery still needed a few enclosed drawers for clothing and personal items. To meet this need, we ordered her this pretty and simple three-drawer dresser. Our initial thought was to use it as a replacement for her nightstand. However, after careful consideration, we decided its optimal placement was on the other side of her bed. This positioning made more sense logistically due to its proximity to her closet, as she often gets dressed on that side of the room. This thoughtful layout ensures maximum functionality and a smooth daily routine for Avery.
