Create Your Own Custom Wall Decals: A DIY Wall Quote Tutorial

1) Prepare Your Wall Surface with DAP Alex Plus Spackling:
Before you even think about applying custom wall decals, ensuring a smooth, pristine wall surface is paramount for a professional finish. In our case, this step was particularly crucial as we had extensive repairs to make. We had removed a previous wall quote and repositioned one of the DIY floating shelves that originally served our twin girls when they shared the room. Moving the shelf down created a desk area, but it left behind a significant amount of repair work. For all these imperfections, I used
DAP Alex Plus Spackling, and I cannot recommend it enough. This product is truly a game-changer! Its unique consistency, which I like to describe as “if caulk and spackle had a baby,” is incredibly smooth and easy to work with, far surpassing any other spackle I’ve used in countless DIY projects. It applies effortlessly, fills holes and cracks seamlessly, and to my delight, it sands down with remarkable ease, producing significantly less dust. This means less cleanup and a quicker path to a perfectly smooth surface for your new wall decor.

2) Secure and Finish Your Desk Area:
After moving the floating shelf to its new desk height, we securely reattached it to the wall. To ensure a seamless look, we caulked the seams where the shelf met the wall. For this, and to smooth out the joint where we added trim to the front of the newly positioned desk, I once again turned to the incredible
DAP Alex Plus Spackling. Its superior consistency allowed for a perfectly blended and smooth finish, making the desk area look built-in and professional. This attention to detail in preparation makes all the difference in the final aesthetic of your wall decor.

3) Carefully Remove Old Wall Decals:
With the wall repairs handled, the next step was to gently remove the old wall quote. While we absolutely adored the previous quote when our girls shared the room, giving Attley her own dedicated space meant it was time for a design that uniquely reflected her. Most of the old wall vinyl peeled off quite easily. However, a word of caution: if you rush this step, you risk pulling up bits of paint along with the vinyl. I did this in a few spots by being too hasty, but thankfully, the versatile DAP Alex Plus Spackling was on hand for quick and easy patch-ups, followed by a touch-up of paint. Take your time to peel the vinyl slowly and at an acute angle to minimize paint damage.

4) Design and Cut Your Fabric-Covered Chipboard Letters:
Once all patched areas were meticulously sanded and repainted, it was finally time to bring our new custom wall decals to life! Don’t let the idea of making your own custom wall decals intimidate you; it’s much simpler than it appears, especially with the right tools. I began with the fabric-covered letters that spell out “COLORS.”
For each letter, I used a single piece of 8.5″ x 11″ chipboard. First, I designed each letter in the Cricut Design Space, ensuring the desired font and size. Then, I placed a piece of chipboard onto my 12 x 12 cutting mat. Crucially, I changed my Cricut machine’s dial to “custom” and selected the “chipboard” option, which automatically adjusts the cutting depth and speed. I cut each chipboard letter one at a time to ensure precision.
Pro Tip: If you have enough fabric to cover all your chipboard pieces, a significant time-saver would be to apply the fabric *before* cutting your letters out. This simplifies the cutting process dramatically. However, if your fabric supply is limited, like mine was, cutting the chipboard first and then individually covering them works perfectly well.

5) Apply Fabric and Seal with Mod Podge:
With all the chipboard letters for “COLORS” expertly cut, the next step was to add their beautiful fabric covering. I started by coating the front side of each chipboard letter generously with Mod Podge (I opted for a matte finish, but any finish will work as it will be covered). Immediately after applying the Mod Podge, I carefully pressed the letter down onto the back side of my chosen fabric, ensuring good adhesion. I then allowed this to dry completely. Once dry, I flipped the letter over and applied another coat of Mod Podge to the front side of the fabric, which helps to seal the fabric and prepare it for cutting. After this second coat dried to the touch, I placed heavy books on top of the fabric-covered letters. This crucial step helps prevent the chipboard from curling or warping as the Mod Podge continues to stiffen and fully cure, ensuring your letters remain perfectly flat.

6) Precisely Cut Fabric Letters with an Exacto Knife:
After allowing the Mod Podge to dry and cure overnight, ensuring maximum stiffness and adhesion, it was time for the precise work of cutting out the fabric letters. Using a sharp Exacto knife, I carefully trimmed the excess fabric around the edges of each chipboard letter. Take your time with this step, following the contour of the chipboard exactly. A steady hand and a sharp blade are key to achieving clean, crisp edges that give your fabric letters a professional, finished look. This meticulous cutting ensures that each letter stands out beautifully as part of your custom wall decal design.

7) Seal and Mount Fabric Letters:
Once the fabric letters were perfectly cut, I applied one final, thin coat of Mod Podge over the entire fabric surface. This additional layer serves as a protective sealant, preventing any potential fraying of the fabric edges over time and adding a subtle, durable finish. After this final coat had thoroughly dried, I was ready to attach the vibrant fabric-covered letters to the wall. For secure and easy adhesion, I used double-sided poster tape. Apply small pieces of tape to the back of each letter, ensuring they are evenly spaced for firm attachment. Position them carefully on the wall, checking alignment before pressing firmly into place.

8) Design and Cut Your Vinyl Wall Decals with Cricut:
Now for the main vinyl portion of your custom wall quote! I was excited to cut out the remainder of my design using my preferred
Cricut Vinyl in Flamingo, a gorgeous color that really makes the quote pop. I typed out the rest of the Shel Silverstein poem in Cricut Design Space, carefully selecting a font and sizing it appropriately for the wall.
Since this was a large quote – for example, this specific section of my design measured approximately 11.5″ tall and 40″ wide – it wouldn’t fit on a standard 12 x 12-inch or even a 12 x 24-inch cutting mat in one go. This requires a technique called “slicing” your design into multiple pieces. I admit, I was initially quite nervous about this, fearing it would be overly complicated. However,
this excellent YouTube video provided a clear, step-by-step walkthrough, making the “slicing” process surprisingly straightforward and completely doable. Once your design is sliced and laid out across multiple mat previews in Design Space, set your Cricut machine’s dial to “vinyl” and proceed to cut out each vinyl portion of your design.

9) “Weed” Your Vinyl Design:
After your Cricut machine has meticulously cut out your vinyl design, the next step is “weeding.” This is the process of carefully removing all the excess vinyl that is not part of your final design. Using a weeding tool (or a craft knife or tweezers), gently peel away the vinyl from around and within your letters and design elements. Take your time to ensure all small inner pieces of letters (like the center of an ‘O’ or ‘A’) are removed, leaving only your intended quote adhered to the vinyl backing. This step reveals the intricate details of your custom wall decal and prepares it for transfer.

10) Apply Transfer Tape:
Once your vinyl design is fully weeded, it’s time to transfer it to transfer tape. This tape acts as an intermediary, holding your design together as you move it from its original backing to the wall. Lay a piece of transfer tape over your weeded vinyl design, sticky side down. Use a scraper tool to firmly rub across the entire surface of the transfer tape, ensuring the vinyl adheres securely to it. If you’ve sliced your design into multiple pieces, you’ll transfer each piece separately, then carefully piece them together on the transfer tape as you work, or directly on the wall. Patience here will pay off in a perfectly aligned final quote.

11) Apply Custom Wall Decals to Your Wall:
This is the moment of truth! Carefully remove the white backing paper from your vinyl design, leaving only the vinyl letters stuck to the transfer tape. Now, it’s time to position your quote on the wall. For a perfectly level and straight application, a laser line level is your best friend. Project a straight line across your wall where the top of your quote should sit. Carefully align the top edge of your transfer tape with this laser line. Once satisfied with the placement, begin pressing the transfer tape onto the wall, starting from the center and working outwards, smoothing with your hands to prevent bubbles. Then, use your scraper tool to firmly rub over the entire vinyl design, ensuring every part of the vinyl adheres securely to the wall surface. Finally, and with great care, gently peel the transfer tape away from the design at an acute angle. If any part of the vinyl attempts to lift, simply press the transfer tape back down and rub again with your scraper tool before attempting to peel it off.

And there you have it! The transformation is complete. We are absolutely thrilled with how this huge wall quote turned out. Not only does it add a wonderfully personalized and vibrant touch to Attley’s room, but it also represents a significant cost saving compared to purchasing pre-made custom wall decals. The entire process, from designing to application, was incredibly rewarding and surprisingly enjoyable. While this tutorial might seem lengthy, I assure you that each step is straightforward and the overall project is much quicker to execute than it might sound.
