Transforming ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones can bring immense joy, especially when it’s for the little people who mean the world to us. Back in 2021, I embarked on a delightful project to turn my daughters’ plain bedroom doors into charming, unique apartment entrances. What started as a whimsical idea quickly captured hearts across social media, going viral multiple times and inspiring countless others. This post will walk you through the simple, magical process of decorating any kid’s bedroom door to mimic a miniature apartment door. We’ll also take a nostalgic look at how our girls’ doors have evolved through various seasons and holidays, showcasing the endless possibilities for personalization and fun. It’s a truly enchanting way to add character and imagination to your home!

There was absolutely nothing inherently wrong with our girls’ bedroom doors. Like many homes, they were standard, functional, and frankly, a bit uninspired. They simply blended into the hallway, lacking any distinctive charm or personality. I knew they had the potential to be so much more than just openings to their rooms; they could be a canvas for creativity and a source of daily delight.

The spark of inspiration struck in the fall of 2021. While browsing Target, I stumbled upon an adorable “Letters for Santa” mailbox. Instantly, a vision materialized: transforming my twin girls’ bedroom doors into charming miniature apartment entrances. The idea hit me with such force and excitement that I completed the first version of this project within a mere 48 hours. I genuinely believe this remains one of the most unique and imaginative hallway decor ideas I’ve ever seen or created, injecting a sense of playfulness and wonder into an otherwise overlooked space.
I take immense pride in the fact that, to my knowledge, I was among the very first to conceive and share this particular decorating concept. In today’s saturated world of Pinterest and Instagram, coming up with truly original ideas is a rare feat! Since I first shared it in 2021, numerous content creators have embraced the trend (many of whom graciously credit me for the initial idea, which is always deeply appreciated). But even more rewarding is seeing countless “regular” parents, non-content creators, creating these magical “apartment doors” for their own children and sending me photos. Their joy and creativity truly make my heart sing.
If you have children and are searching for a way to infuse personality and enchantment into your home’s hallway, I wholeheartedly encourage you to consider this project. Even three years later, my girls continue to adore this special area of our home. It’s not just a static decoration; it’s a dynamic canvas that brings endless fun as we redecorate it for various seasons and holidays, fostering a sense of excitement and anticipation with each change.

We recently finished decorating the doors for Christmas this year, and the festive transformation turned out absolutely splendidly, filling our hallway with holiday cheer.

Earlier this year, for the first time, I decided to decorate their bedroom doors for Halloween. I kept it a complete surprise, transforming the hallway while they were out. Their reaction upon seeing the spooky yet playful decor was priceless; they absolutely adored it, and it instantly became a new favorite seasonal display.

Now, let’s rewind to 2021, the very beginning of this project, so I can share exactly how you can recreate this captivating “apartment door” aesthetic for your own children’s bedrooms. This step-by-step guide will provide you with all the details and inspiration needed to make your hallway truly remarkable.
How to Decorate Your Kid’s Bedroom Door to Look Like an Apartment Door
Essential Year-Round “Apartment Door” Elements
To achieve that authentic, charming apartment door look, there are a few foundational elements that are crucial and can remain on the doors throughout the year. These “staples” create the illusion of a mini-residence and serve as a base for seasonal decorations.
- Door-Mounted Mailbox: This is arguably the most impactful item. A small, functional mailbox instantly conveys the feeling of a private dwelling. Choose a style that fits the overall aesthetic you’re aiming for – a classic black metal one for a traditional look, or a colorful, whimsical one for a playful vibe. It also provides a fun spot for leaving notes or small surprises.
- Door Knocker: A decorative door knocker adds an undeniable touch of elegance and realism. From classic lion heads to simple, modern designs, a knocker transforms a flat door into an entrance with character. It’s also a fun, tactile element for kids.
- Door Numbers: Just like real apartments, each door needs its own unique identifier. You can purchase ready-made numbers in various fonts and finishes, or, like me, create custom ones with a Cricut cutting machine for a truly personalized touch. These instantly designate each door as a distinct living space.
- Wreath: A small wreath, even a simple, neutral one, adds a welcoming and finished look. It’s a classic front door embellishment that translates perfectly to miniature apartment doors. Opt for a greenery wreath or a felt ball wreath that can easily be swapped or adorned seasonally.
- Doormat: No apartment entrance is complete without a doormat. Miniature doormats, or even small decorative rugs, can be placed right in front of each door. This element grounds the space and adds another layer of realism and charm.
- A Lantern with a Battery-Operated Puck Light: If your hallway configuration allows for it, adding a small decorative lantern with a battery-operated puck light creates a warm, inviting glow, mimicking a porch light. It adds depth and a cozy ambiance, especially at night.
Seasonal and Holiday Decor Ideas
Once you have your year-round staples in place, the real fun begins with seasonal and holiday decorating. This is where you can unleash your creativity and keep the hallway feeling fresh and exciting for your kids throughout the year:
- Garland: Draping a festive garland around the doorframe instantly transforms the space. Think evergreen garlands for Christmas, fall foliage for Thanksgiving, or whimsical floral garlands for spring.
- Seasonal Wreaths: Swap out your year-round wreath for one that reflects the current season or holiday. A spooky Halloween wreath, a vibrant spring floral wreath, or a snowy winter wonderland wreath will instantly change the mood.
- Novelty Decor: This is where you can truly let your imagination run wild!
- Last Christmas, we simply couldn’t resist adding this adorable Christmas Bernese Mountain dog figurine to our display, adding a playful and unexpected touch.
- This year, we elevated the ceiling decor by incorporating these gorgeous snowflake lanterns paired with remote-controlled LED lights, creating a magical, twinkling effect overhead.
- For Halloween, consider adding playful spiderwebs, mini pumpkins, or even hanging witches’ hats from the ceiling.
- For spring, think about small birdhouses, artificial flowers, or pastel-colored ribbons.
When I first envisioned this project, my goal was to evoke the charm of exterior apartment doors, much like the brick row homes found in historic city neighborhoods. To achieve this, I initially applied peel-and-stick brick wallpaper to the walls surrounding the doors, giving them an instant architectural feel. I even crafted a custom street sign holder to enhance the urban illusion. As a fun DIY aside, the colorful pom-pom wreath on Attley’s door in the early photos was a project I made myself; you can find the full tutorial here: DIY pom pom wreath.

Infusing Personal Touches for a Unique Space
What truly elevates any decor project, especially one designed for your children, are the deeply personal touches that tell your family’s story. Our “apartment doors” hallway is brimming with such details, including heartfelt nods to our family’s firefighting legacy. Most of you know that my husband, Joe, is a dedicated firefighter. What you might not know is that his father, who we sadly lost last year, also served as a volunteer firefighter. The vintage fire department sign proudly displayed in our hallway belonged to him, a cherished heirloom that connects us to his memory. The antique fire extinguishers, which I discovered at a local antique shop years ago, were a surprise for Joe and found their perfect home in this space, adding an authentic, historical feel.
Beyond these more obvious tributes, there are subtle yet significant details you might initially overlook. The address numbers on each door, for instance, aren’t random; they represent the exact times our twin girls were born. These small, meaningful inclusions make the space not just visually appealing, but also deeply sentimental, turning a decorative project into a tangible expression of family love and history.

A Journey Through the Seasons: Our Girls’ “Apartment” Doors Over Time
Interior design is an evolving journey, and our hallway transformation is a perfect example. In 2022, we decided to update the look of our entire hallway by installing a DIY board and batten accent wall. This meant we removed the peel-and-stick brick wallpaper that initially defined the “apartment” aesthetic. The board and batten provided a clean, classic backdrop that complemented the doors beautifully, offering a slightly more sophisticated yet still charming vibe. The photos below show how the space has looked for the past two Christmases with this updated wall treatment. While we typically use many of the same beloved decorations each year, we always make a point to switch a few things up to keep the look fresh and exciting, adding new elements or rearranging familiar ones for renewed festive cheer.

And here is how the space embraces the vibrant, refreshing spirit of Spring, adorned with bright, cheerful decor that lightens the entire hallway and brings a sense of renewal.

What can I say? My deepest form of expression and love is creating unique, meaningful spaces for the people I cherish most. My girls continue to absolutely adore their “apartment doors,” and my hope is that this magical little spot, crafted just for them, will be a cherished memory they carry always. The doors are consistently decorated to reflect their individuality; even though they are twins, their personalities and styles are wonderfully distinct, and this hallway celebrates each of their unique spirits. It’s a constant reminder of how much joy a little creativity can bring into everyday life.
