Light Yellow Tulle: One roll of Expo Classic Tulle Spool of 25-Yard, Light Yellow. This provides a lovely contrast and adds to the layered, straw-like appearance.
Chocolate Brown Tulle: One roll of Offray Tulle Craft Ribbon, 6-Inch by 25-Yard Spool, Chocolate. The darker shade grounds the costume and mimics classic scarecrow elements.
Sunflower: One artificial sunflower. Choose one with a sturdy head that you can easily remove the stem from. This will be the focal point of the costume’s bodice.
Orange Chiffon Ribbon: A spool of soft, flowing orange chiffon ribbon adds a delicate touch and a pop of color.
Burlap Ribbon: A roll of burlap ribbon will create the rustic halter straps, perfectly complementing the scarecrow theme.
Elastic: Approximately 1/2 to 1 inch wide elastic for the waistband. The length will depend on your child’s chest measurement.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Create Your Scarecrow Tutu Halloween Costume

This DIY project is straightforward, but it does require a bit of patience, especially during the tulle-cutting phase. Enlist a helper or put on your favorite podcast, and let’s get crafting!

Preparation: Measurements and Elastic Base

1) Determine the Tutu Length: Have your child stand straight, wearing the shoes they will likely wear with the costume. Measure from their armpit down to the floor. This measurement is crucial because the voluminous nature of the tulle will cause the skirt to poof out and appear shorter. Aiming for floor-length initially ensures that once the tutu is full, it will still provide ample coverage and the desired dramatic effect.

2) Create the Elastic Waistband: Next, measure your child’s chest circumference directly under her armpits. This is where the top edge of the tutu will sit. Cut your elastic piece about 1 inch longer than this measurement. This extra inch allows for a comfortable seam allowance. Overlap the ends of the elastic by about half an inch and securely sew them together, forming a sturdy loop. A simple zigzag stitch or multiple straight stitches will work perfectly to ensure it holds firmly.

The Art of Tulle: Cutting and Tying

3) Cut Your Tulle Strips: This is arguably the most time-consuming part, but it’s also quite meditative! On a large, flat surface, such as a dining table or clean floor, begin cutting your tulle into strips. Each strip needs to be twice as long as the length you measured in Step 1. For example, if your measurement from armpit to floor was 30 inches, each tulle strip should be 60 inches long. You’ll be using all four rolls of tulle, so having a good audiobook, some music, or even a friend to chat with will make the process fly by. Consider wrapping the tulle around a piece of cardboard cut to your desired double length for faster, more consistent cutting.

4) Prepare for Tying: Stretch your elastic loop over a stable object that is roughly the same circumference as your child’s chest. A sturdy chair back, a large vase, or even a stack of rolled-up towels can work well. This provides the tension you need to easily tie on the tulle strips.

5) Begin Tying the Tulle: Now for the fun part! Take one strip of tulle and fold it in half, creating a loop at one end. Place this looped end underneath the elastic band. Then, thread the two loose ends of the tulle strip through the loop and pull tightly to secure it around the elastic. This is known as a lark’s head knot. Repeat this process with all your cut tulle strips, pushing them snugly together to ensure a full and fluffy tutu. For a balanced scarecrow aesthetic, alternate your tulle colors. A good ratio to aim for is approximately two orange strips, followed by one yellow, and then one brown. Continue this pattern around the entire elastic band until you’ve achieved your desired fullness. I used all four full rolls of tulle per dress to create a wonderfully voluminous and eye-catching costume.

Assembling the Costume: Straps and Embellishments

6) Attach the Burlap Halter Straps: Once all your tulle strips are tied, you’re ready to add the burlap ribbon halter straps. Cut two equal lengths of burlap ribbon. Form them into a “V” shape, ensuring they cross comfortably in the back and come together at the center front of the elastic band. Hand-sew the bottom portion of the “V” (where the two ribbons overlap) securely to the inside of the elastic strip. Don’t worry about perfection here; these stitches will be hidden, so focus on strength over neatness!

7) Add the Sunflower and Chiffon Ribbon: The final touch for the bodice is the charming sunflower and chiffon ribbon. Take your orange chiffon ribbon and place it beneath the sunflower, allowing the ends to drape gracefully. This placement also conveniently hides any raw edges or attachment points of the sunflower. Now, carefully hand-stitch the sunflower and the chiffon ribbon together onto the front center of the elastic band, just above where the burlap straps meet. Again, tidy stitches aren’t critical as the flower itself will obscure them, but make sure they are firm enough to hold the embellishments in place throughout all the Halloween fun!

Completing the Scarecrow Look: Accessories and Makeup

No scarecrow is complete without a whimsical hat and a few signature details! To finish the look for my girls, I found coordinating scarecrow hats from Chasing Fireflies for $12.50 each. If these aren’t available, this is also a very cute option that would work wonderfully. Since Halloween evenings can be chilly, I purchased long-sleeved yellow shirts from Old Navy for them to wear underneath their dresses, ensuring they stayed warm and comfortable while adding another layer of autumnal color.

For the classic scarecrow face, I used a brown lipstick to gently paint little triangular noses on their faces. Then, with brown eyeliner, I carefully drew on the “stitches” around the corners of their mouths and across their cheeks, giving them that iconic sewn-together scarecrow grin. A touch of blush on their cheeks enhanced their natural rosy glow, making them look even more adorable and ready for their Halloween adventures!

You can also consider adding a few small patches made from felt or scrap fabric to the tutu itself for an extra touch of rustic charm. A small bundle of raffia tied to the elastic or peeking out from under the hat can further enhance the straw-like appearance. Don’t forget some cozy tights or leggings in a matching autumn shade if the weather calls for it.
