Today, I’m excited to share the journey that led us to choose laminate flooring – a decision that might just surprise you, especially if you, like me, once considered yourself a die-hard hardwood loyalist. Our experience has been nothing short of transformative, and by the end of this, you might discover that laminate flooring is the perfect solution for your living space too.
To truly appreciate our decision, let me take you back through our home ownership history. Our very first home, a charming build from 1925, boasted spectacular heart-of-pine wood floors that exuded timeless elegance and character. Later, in our second home, built in 1990, we invested in beautiful oak hardwood floors, installed with care before we even moved in. Then came our third residence, a 1926 gem, which featured original, stunning oak floors that we lovingly had professionally refinished. For years, I was an unwavering champion of genuine hardwood. The mere mention of laminate flooring or any other budget-friendly flooring alternatives used to make me shudder. I believed that only authentic, natural wood could truly elevate a home’s aesthetic and value. Anything less simply wouldn’t do.
However, circumstances shifted dramatically when we purchased our current home at the end of 2012. This 1986 property presented a completely different flooring landscape. The existing “wood” floors were badly damaged bamboo, which, to be frank, we disliked immensely – the color, the grain, everything about them. The rest of the house was a mix of outdated tile, worn vinyl, and tired carpet. It was a diverse but uninspiring collection that desperately needed an overhaul. Almost immediately after settling into this new space, the intense discussion about our permanent flooring solution began. And to my own astonishment, and likely yours, we very quickly ruled out real hardwood floors. Instead, we made the bold decision to opt for laminate. Trust me, the shock factor was high, even for us. But looking back, it’s a choice I would wholeheartedly make again and again. It proved to be the absolute perfect decision for our family and our home. You might be wondering, “Why the sudden change of heart?” Well, allow me to share the compelling reasons that swayed us.
Four Compelling Reasons We Chose Laminate Flooring for Our Home
Our decision to embrace laminate flooring wasn’t made lightly. It was a thoughtful process driven by a combination of practical needs, financial considerations, and a desire for a beautiful, functional home. Here are the primary factors that led us to become passionate advocates for modern laminate solutions:
1) Cost-Effectiveness and Budget-Friendly Installation
One of the most significant advantages of laminate flooring, and arguably the primary driver for many homeowners, is its affordability compared to traditional hardwood. As a family committed to avoiding loans for home improvement projects, a home equity line was not a viable option for us.
Laminate flooring, however, offered a much more flexible and budget-conscious approach. With laminate, especially with our home’s layout, we could easily tackle the installation one room at a time. There’s no on-site staining or sanding required, which not only simplifies the process but also eliminates significant labor costs. Beyond the installation flexibility, the material cost of laminate itself is inherently more affordable. This combination of lower material cost and easier, phased installation represented a clear win for our budget, allowing us to achieve a cohesive, high-quality look across our entire home without financial strain. It truly made a significant impact on our overall renovation strategy, proving that beauty doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag.
2) Unmatched Durability for Real Life
When it comes to withstanding the rigors of daily life, modern laminate floors are undeniably superior in durability compared to most traditional hardwoods. This became a critical factor for us, especially after our experiences in previous homes. We welcomed our beloved dog, Titan, a magnificent 90-pound Boxer, into our family in 2007. After having the gorgeous hardwoods in our previous house professionally refinished, we soon noticed that Titan’s enthusiastic toenails, despite our best efforts, inevitably left their mark on the surface. It was disheartening, but an unavoidable reality of living with a large, active dog.
The situation became even more pressing with the arrival of our twin girls in 2011. The thought of constantly worrying about them pushing wagons, dragging toy grocery carts, or simply dropping toys on delicate real wood floors was profoundly unappealing. We wanted them to enjoy their childhood, to play freely and boisterously, without us constantly flinching or cautioning them about potential scratches or dents. Our home needed to be a place of joy and exploration, not a museum for our floors.
With our laminate floors, this concern simply vanished. We now happily let Titan play fetch indoors – he can run at full speed, “Road Runner” style, across the floors without leaving even the tiniest mark. It’s truly astounding to witness. Similarly, as our girls grew and inevitably dragged toys around or dropped items, we don’t even bat an eye. The resilience of these floors is remarkable. We’ve had the laminate installed in our girls’ playroom for approximately two and a half years, and in the laundry room for over two years. Based on this extensive real-world experience, I can confidently say that these floors are darn near indestructible. This level of peace of mind and carefree living was something I simply did not experience with real hardwoods, making laminate an unequivocal winner for our active family.

Even if we had found a way to afford hardwoods, the sheer scope of the installation would have forced us to hire out the job. At the time we moved into our house, our twin girls were just about to turn two. Our days were filled with the joys and demands of toddlerhood, leaving us no endless hours to dedicate to the arduous process of installing an entire house full of hardwood floors. Choosing Our Perfect Match: How We Selected Our Laminate Flooring
With our minds made up about laminate, the next crucial step was selecting the right product. After extensive research and countless samples, we finally discovered a laminate floor that we absolutely adored. Our search led us to hand-scraped laminate floors made by Select Surfaces. The most delightful surprise was finding them readily available at Sam’s Club, priced at an incredibly reasonable $1.76 per square foot. The hand-scraped finish was particularly captivating, as it beautifully mimics the authentic, artisanal look of much more expensive hardwood floors. Moreover, these particular laminate floors felt exceptionally thick and sturdy, and crucially, they featured an attached foam backing. This integrated backing was a key selling point, as it promised to mitigate that common, often irritating, hollow sound associated with some laminate installations. We were hopeful that this design would provide a solid, quiet feel underfoot.
Taking a leap of faith, we decided to purchase a substantial quantity of the Canyon Oak flooring. A practical tip we learned the hard way: I highly, highly recommend ordering the amount of flooring you need directly from Sam’s Club’s website and having it shipped directly to your home. At the time, shipping was free, and it saves you an immense amount of heavy lifting, loading, and unloading. Alternatively, opt for online payment and in-store pickup, but always confirm stock availability beforehand to ensure you have enough to complete your entire project. We made the mistake of simply driving to Sam’s Club, only to discover they had very few boxes left, necessitating additional trips and delays. Planning ahead will save you considerable time and effort.
Our flooring adventure began in our girls’ playroom, a space that was previously a rather uninspiring beige box covered in old, rather nasty carpet. The transformation was swift and satisfying. We installed the new laminate floors in just a single day, and the process involved surprisingly minimal mess. The only truly “messy” part was the initial task of ripping out the old carpet and its padding, which, as you can imagine, was quite a gross undertaking. But once that was done, the actual flooring installation was a treat – no dusty sanding, no sticky staining! This was a monumental relief, as the hollow sound is often a major concern with laminate flooring. You would honestly never know you were walking on a laminate floor; it feels solid, quiet, and substantial, just like real wood. This feature alone made all the difference, truly elevating the laminate experience to a premium level.
The resounding success in the playroom gave us the confidence to tackle more spaces. A few months later, we installed the same gorgeous Select Surfaces laminate floors in our family room.
