When it comes to effective playroom storage, one of my paramount recommendations is to embrace as much closed, yet easily accessible, storage as possible. This approach offers the ultimate “best of both worlds” scenario: it elegantly conceals clutter from view, maintaining a serene aesthetic, while simultaneously ensuring that children can independently access their toys and supplies. I frequently receive inquiries about our specific bookshelves and cabinets, and for good reason! They are part of the reliable Eket series from IKEA, and we couldn’t be happier with them. Having used them for over 18 months, their durability and functionality have consistently impressed us, especially given their excellent price point relative to their quality. These modular units are incredibly versatile, holding a vast amount of items and allowing us to neatly tuck away countless toys and games.

Within these cabinets, we employ simple yet smart organization tactics. For instance, one cabinet is dedicated to storing items like Lego instructions, origami paper, and various crafting materials. Previously, our board game collection demanded more than two entire cabinets. Now, thanks to the zippered pouches, they fit neatly into just one cube of our bookshelves, with only a single floor basket needed for the few games that are slightly larger and couldn’t quite fit the pouches. Only two games absolutely refused to fit, even in the largest pouches, and these are housed in one of the cabinets mentioned earlier. For each game, I carefully placed the instructions inside its corresponding pouch and then labeled the exterior clearly using my indispensable label maker. This system ensures easy access, keeps all components together, and—most importantly—reclaims valuable storage space, making our playroom feel far less congested and much more functional.

This next tip is truly one of my most cherished and effective strategies for playroom organization: invest in high-quality lidded bins that are designed to stack. This directly ties back to the core philosophy of “closed but accessible” storage, which, in my experience, is the ultimate winning combination for taming toy clutter. These bins allow you to store practically anything, providing a neat facade while keeping contents readily available for eager hands. In our home, we primarily use these lidded bins for Lego storage, and the system has proven to be incredibly successful.

Our choice for these indispensable containers are the IKEA Kuggis storage bins. They are not only budget-friendly but also remarkably sturdy.
