My Home Office Before: A Look Back at What Was
Before we immerse ourselves in the bright and cheerful “after” photos, let’s take a moment to recall the previous iteration of my home office. For several years, this space sported a distinct industrial farmhouse aesthetic, a style that, while not inherently unappealing, never quite resonated with my personal taste or functional needs for a dedicated workspace. It was pretty in its own way, but it wasn’t me.

The primary reason for this particular style choice was rooted in the room’s former life as our daughters’ playroom. When I transitioned into the space, I inherited the robust industrial bookshelves and desks we had custom-built for them. These units offered ample storage for toys and craft supplies suited for a playroom, but as my own professional and creative demands grew, they proved to be less than ideal for a bustling home office and craft studio.
Regrettably, instead of addressing the foundational elements immediately, I opted to “work with” the existing shelves. This decision led to a decor scheme that revolved around their dark, imposing presence. The result was an office that felt heavy, somewhat dark, and ultimately lacked the specific types of storage solutions I desperately needed for my vast collection of paint, craft supplies, camera equipment, and miscellaneous project materials. It was a space that didn’t inspire the creativity I sought to foster, nor did it offer the ergonomic and bright environment conducive to long hours of work.
The Vision: Our Home Office & Craft Room Makeover Plan
Following the successful completion of our extensive kitchen renovation, my home office and craft room quickly ascended to the top of our priority list. It was clear that these vital spaces required a dedicated overhaul to truly support my work and creative passions. To kickstart the process, I turned to my trusty copy of Designer in a Binder – a tool I genuinely rely on for my own design projects. This comprehensive guide helped me systematically evaluate what was working (very little!) and what absolutely had to go. We meticulously assessed the existing layout, identified pieces that could be sold to fund the new additions, and then meticulously crafted a fresh design plan and floor plan.

Our key objectives for this ambitious home office makeover and craft room transformation were clearly defined:
- Enhance Brightness and Light: We aimed to banish the dark, industrial feel and infuse the rooms with an abundance of natural light and a cheerful, airy aesthetic. A lighter color palette and strategically chosen furniture were essential for this.
- Optimize Desk Functionality for Two: The previous setup was barely functional for one, let alone two. Our goal was to create a comfortable, efficient desk area that could easily accommodate two people working simultaneously without feeling cramped or inefficient. This was crucial for collaborative work sessions with my husband, Joe, and my Content Manager, Thea.
- Maximize Functional Storage: This was perhaps the most critical goal. With a growing collection of craft supplies, photography equipment, and various project materials, a robust, accessible, and organized storage system was non-negotiable. Everything needed a designated home.
- Establish a Dedicated Creative Zone: Beyond the administrative work, I needed a distinct area solely dedicated to creative projects, DIYs, and, importantly, a setup optimized for YouTube filming. This required a flexible workspace that could adapt to different creative endeavors and provide a professional backdrop for video content.
I was determined to execute this makeover efficiently and effectively, especially with my increased focus on developing content for my YouTube channel this Fall. Having a studio-ready setup was paramount, ensuring that I could effortlessly set up cameras, lighting, and backdrops for seamless video production. The plan was comprehensive, budget-conscious, and geared towards creating spaces that would genuinely enhance both my productivity and creative output.
Achieving Our Goals: The Results Speak for Themselves
We are absolutely thrilled to report that every single one of our ambitious goals for this home office and craft room transformation was not only met but exceeded! The transformation is truly remarkable, and the spaces now function precisely as we envisioned. What’s even more satisfying is that we managed to approach this makeover with incredible financial savvy. We successfully sold all of the old furniture, including those large industrial bookshelves, and the proceeds from those sales covered an impressive 90% of the cost of all the new furnishings and storage solutions. This was a significant win, proving that a dream home office and craft room are absolutely achievable on a realistic budget.
A Bright New Chapter: My Home Office Makeover Reveal
Step inside our newly revamped home office, a space now intelligently divided into distinct, highly functional zones. The primary area is dedicated to productivity and collaborative work, perfectly designed to accommodate two people working comfortably side-by-side. This arrangement is invaluable, especially when Joe joins me to tackle accounting and administrative tasks on his days off, or when my Content Manager, Thea, works with me in person. The synergy in this refreshed environment is palpable.

The most impactful change, both aesthetically and functionally, was the complete overhaul of our furniture from dark industrial pieces to a cohesive, all-white IKEA system. This simple yet powerful color swap created an immediate sense of spaciousness, brightness, and modern elegance. We ingeniously utilized IKEA Alex drawer units, opting for crisp white instead of their previous black counterparts. These versatile units serve as the sturdy bases for our individual workstations, topped with sleek IKEA Linmonn desktops. The brilliant centerpiece is a shared table, ingeniously constructed from an IKEA Kallax bookshelf, offering both storage and support, crowned with another Linmonn desktop. The result is an incredibly functional, stylish, and unbelievably affordable double desk setup – a testament to smart design on a budget.

To foster an even more inclusive environment, we tucked a couple of simple, inexpensive IKEA stools beneath the central table. This thoughtful addition means our girls can comfortably join us in the office, whether they’re tackling homework or enjoying a game of cards while we work. It transforms the professional workspace into a flexible family hub.

Our gallery wall also received a subtle yet significant update. While we kept many of our favorite art prints, the most dramatic effect came from simply swapping out their frames for sleek white ones. It’s astonishing how this seemingly minor change instantly elevated the entire wall, contributing to the lighter, brighter ambiance we aimed for. Indeed, the combination of white furniture and white frames has been nothing short of transformative for the overall feel of the home office. Mission accomplished – the space is now unmistakably lighter, brighter, and more inspiring.
Adjacent to my desk stands a substantial white wall of cabinetry – our beloved IKEA Pax system. This unit was actually installed a while ago, and its enduring functionality meant it seamlessly integrated into the new design. It’s my go-to storage solution for essential items like camera equipment, a vast array of paints, and supplies for upcoming projects. While highly effective, I must admit it was a more significant investment compared to the incredibly budget-friendly IKEA Algot system we chose for the craft room. You’ll see the magic of the Algot craft room storage in just a moment, and I’m eager to share why it stole my heart!

The Ultimate Creative Hub: My Craft Room Reveal
Adjacent to the home office, you’ll discover the vibrant heart of our creative operations: the dedicated craft and project zone. This area is a dream come true for any crafter or DIY enthusiast, designed from the ground up to inspire and organize. The cornerstone of this space is an entire wall of bespoke craft room storage, achieved brilliantly using the IKEA Algot system. I cannot emphasize enough how utterly *in love* I am with this system! Not only is it incredibly versatile and customizable, but this entire wall of phenomenal storage came in at less than $500 – an absolute steal for the functionality it provides. Get ready, because a detailed post on how to install and maximize the Algot system is coming your way soon, transforming your craft room organization into pure heaven!

These photos beautifully illustrate the seamless flow between the home office and the craft zone. Through the elegant French doors, you can catch a glimpse of our inviting family room, highlighting how these spaces are integrated within our home’s open plan, yet each maintains its distinct purpose and character.

Intelligent Storage Solutions with IKEA Algot
The beauty of the Algot craft room storage system lies in its incredible capacity and adaptability. It swallows up an enormous amount of supplies, keeping everything neatly categorized and easily accessible. On the top two shelves, I’ve strategically placed items I frequently use as photo props – plush pillows, vibrant faux plants, and other decorative elements that add personality to my content. Below that, pride of place is given to my indispensable Cricut and Silhouette cutting machines, alongside my Cricut EasyPress. A cleverly integrated pegboard provides quick access to smaller, frequently used items like paper towels and an assortment of colorful ribbons, hanging neatly within reach.
The spacious drawers of the Algot system are a true organizational marvel, housing everything else imaginable: bolts of fabric, skeins of yarn, tubes of paint in every shade, and a myriad of other craft essentials. What’s truly delightful is that some drawers are still completely empty! This abundance of space is a luxury, allowing for future expansion and ensuring that clutter remains a distant memory. It’s genuinely a “good problem to have” when you have more storage than you currently need.

The Ultimate Adjustable Project Table
And let’s not overlook the star of the craft zone: our ultimate adjustable project table! Also sourced from IKEA, this remarkable table features a smooth crank mechanism, allowing you to effortlessly adjust its height to your exact preference. This versatility is a game-changer for creative pursuits. I frequently use it as a standing desk when tackling hands-on projects, which alleviates back strain and provides a dynamic workspace. However, its ability to be lowered is equally invaluable when I’m engrossed in delicate tasks like watercolor painting or focused on intricate sewing projects. It truly adapts to every creative need, ensuring comfort and efficiency no matter the craft.

A Touch of Heritage: Organized Sewing Threads
Speaking of sewing, a deeply cherished piece of family history found its perfect place in this new setup. Years ago, I inherited my grandmother’s antique sewing chest, a treasure filled with memories and countless spools of thread. I finally dedicated the time to meticulously sort through its contents, organizing all of her beautiful threads by color, and then lovingly displayed them on the wall for both easy access and a vibrant decorative touch. While the original chest itself will continue its legacy as Attley’s bedside table, the threads are now proudly showcased in their rightful home, a constant reminder of her creative spirit.

Embracing Reality: The Exercise Zone
Finally, we arrive at a zone born more out of practical necessity than aesthetic design, a candid glimpse into the realities of living in a real home. Many bloggers might shy away from showcasing such an area, but I firmly believe in transparency. We’ve always needed a dedicated spot for our exercise bike, and frankly, there’s no other suitable place in our home where it fits so perfectly. While it may not be the most visually appealing element in our otherwise beautifully designed spaces, we are incredibly grateful to have the bike and, more importantly, a designated spot for it. So, if you’re among those who also navigate the challenge of openly incorporating exercise equipment into your living spaces, rest assured, you are certainly not alone in this beautifully imperfect journey of home design and functionality!

This comprehensive tour brings us to the end of our home office and craft room reveal! We’ve poured so much thought and effort into creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also incredibly functional and inspiring. We are absolutely loving the new bright, organized, and collaborative environment, and it truly feels like a breath of fresh air. From the dual-purpose office desk to the ingenious IKEA Algot craft storage and the versatile adjustable table, every element has been carefully chosen to enhance productivity and creativity while adhering to a realistic budget. We hope you feel as inspired by this transformation as we are!
