Transforming Spaces: The Eclectic and Colorful Guest Room Reveal You’ve Been Waiting For

Hello, fellow home decor enthusiasts! After nearly two years of living in our current home, I am absolutely thrilled to finally announce the completion of our guest room makeover. This space has been a labor of love, evolving from an empty shell into a vibrant, welcoming sanctuary. I’m excited to share all the inspiring photos, thoughtful details, and the creative journey behind our eclectic and colorful guest room. For those of you who have been following along, you’ll know this guest bedroom project began even before we officially moved into our house. We laid the groundwork by having the walls painted in a crisp Sherwin-Williams Pure White, creating a bright and airy foundation. Simultaneously, the outdated carpet was replaced with beautiful hardwoods, extending the seamless flow and elegant aesthetic of the rest of our home into this crucial space. These initial transformations alone marked a dramatic departure from how the room originally looked, providing a fresh canvas for our vision.

Like many home renovation projects, this room then entered a period of quiet contemplation – or, perhaps more accurately, stagnation. For quite some time, the guest room sat largely unused, even lacking a proper bed since the one from our old guest room found a new home in Avery’s new bedroom. It’s a common story in home design; sometimes, life simply gets in the way, and certain spaces wait patiently for their turn in the spotlight.

The turning point arrived last November, spurred by an impending visit from my mother-in-law. This deadline provided the perfect motivation to give the space a much-needed overhaul. We embarked on several key projects, starting with the creation of a truly unique and engaging DIY headboard with customizable messages. This headboard, a personal favorite among my DIY projects, immediately injected personality and a focal point into the room. We then introduced a gorgeous area rug, anchoring the space with color and texture, and invested in a comfortable mattress and platform bed, essential for any inviting guest retreat. To tie everything together, we repainted the dresser to harmonize with the emerging color palette and even added a touch of artwork. While these efforts vastly improved the room’s functionality and aesthetic, it still wasn’t quite “finished.”

The Grand Finale: Bringing Our Eclectic Guest Room to Life

Well, friends, the day has finally arrived! I am overjoyed to announce that this space is genuinely, completely, and utterly finished. The final phase of this guest room transformation focused on three crucial elements that elevate any room from good to truly exceptional. First, we needed to thoughtfully address the blank wall space above the bed in a way that would complement, rather than compete with, our unique DIY headboard. Second, the room required a layered lighting scheme beyond the single overhead pendant, offering warmth and flexibility. And finally, I sought to infuse the space with more textural interest and, as always, the calming presence of plants.

Layering Light and Personal Touches

To tackle the lighting and the blank wall above the bed, I opted for these incredibly inexpensive sconces (and if you’re looking for more options, you can find many of my favorite sconces here). These stylish fixtures served a dual purpose beautifully. Firstly, they provided the much-needed accent lighting, casting a soft glow that instantly makes the room feel more inviting and cozy. Secondly, their elegant design helped to visually fill the empty space above the bed without overwhelming or detracting from our bespoke headboard. A smart trick we employed was to forego hardwiring the sconces. Instead, we used these ingenious screw-in puck lights, which operate effortlessly with a remote control. This provides the aesthetic of integrated lighting with the flexibility and ease of battery-operated fixtures, perfect for a guest room where hardwiring might be an unnecessary complication.

With the sconces in place, the next challenge was to select the perfect piece to hang between them. After much deliberation, I knew I wanted something deeply personal – a cherished photograph rather than a generic art print – and ideally, something long and rectangular to complement the space. My thoughts immediately turned to a panoramic photo I captured of Joe and the girls during our summer vacation. To bring this vision to life, I decided to try Framebridge for the first time. I can wholeheartedly say it was the PERFECT solution! This was not a sponsored collaboration or a gifted item; I was genuinely impressed by the ability to completely customize the finished size, choose the ideal frame, and even add a beautiful custom plaque to the bottom. This personal touch has become one of my absolute favorite elements in the room, telling a story and adding a layer of warmth that ready-made art simply couldn’t. Continuing with our commitment to layered lighting, I also added this incredible Pottery Barn dupe lamp to the painted dresser. This lamp is not only remarkably affordable but also incredibly stylish, providing another source of soft illumination that enhances the room’s ambiance. Strategic placement of lamps and sconces ensures that guests have various lighting options, from bright overhead light to warm, task-specific glow for reading or relaxing.

Adding Texture, Character, and Life with Sentimental Details

To introduce more textural interest and a touch of heartfelt character, I hung several gorgeous embroidered pieces handmade by my late grandmother. These invaluable heirlooms now grace a small section of wall nestled between the closet and the guest bathroom, providing a beautiful focal point that speaks to family history and adds incredible depth to the eclectic design. Incorporating vintage or handmade items is a cornerstone of eclectic decor, allowing for a unique blend of old and new, and these pieces are truly treasures that make the room feel personal and loved. I also temporarily brought this basket in from our family room. While I appreciate the concept of a large, functional basket in this corner, I’m still considering whether it’s the perfect fit. I envision a basket with a more subdued color palette might better complement the existing textiles and artwork, creating a more cohesive look. This iterative process of trying out items is an integral part of interior design, allowing for adjustments until the space feels just right.

And, as is almost always the case in my design philosophy, I brought in plants. Multiple plants, in fact! Plants are more than just decor; they are living elements that infuse a space with vitality, freshness, and a calming presence. They add organic texture, a touch of vibrant green, and contribute to a healthier indoor environment. Strategically placed, they soften corners, fill empty spaces, and make any room feel instantly more alive and welcoming, truly embodying the spirit of an inviting guest retreat.

This room now fully reflects our home’s personality, offering a warm and inspiring haven for anyone who stays.
